I’m Baaaaaaaaaack!

I’m back from the greatest and most eventful spring break I’ve had in years… and maybe ever! But I’ve been itching to get back to this computer, since I’ve never had such a long absence from this blog! I have so much to share with you, including TONS of photos and stories from my T.A.P.S. and Chip Coffey weekend at Belvoir Winery  in Liberty, Missouri… but I feel I should share chronologically. Plus, I just now got back home and must now return to a busy real life tomorrow, and I have much to go through in order to work up some Belvoir posts. I’m so excited though, because I have plenty to share, including meeting more para-celebs and some great new friends! Also, perhaps some video clips from our large group investigation from Saturday night! So stay tuned…

THE PARANORMAL PORTION OF THIS POST

So here’s a little update. I wrote the first part of this post yesterday and intended to publish it last night. I’ve been recovering from a cold and some kind of a bug since returning from Cancun. Suddenly in the middle of this post, I began getting chills that within an hour became more intense than I’ve ever experienced. It was horrible. I stood in a hot shower for a ridiculous amount of time, and when I forced myself to get out, I curled up in blankets on the bed. I couldn’t get warm enough. As I began to shiver myself to sleep, I either straight up hallucinated or dreamed that I had physically jumped inside my iPhone (not easy for a fat man) and was cruising through my Facebook feed. So… very… bizarre. I ultimately ended up sleeping for a few hours and woke up at bedtime, of course. Was I visited by the ghost of Montezuma? Did Trixie at Imos add some fairy dust to my pizza? (Oh you KNOW I’m totally going to put “fairy” and “faery” in the tags to this post now.)  I really don’t know, and I’m feeling much better today, but I stayed home from school to be sure (after several late night hours of creating substitute teacher plans, of course). One thing is certain, last night was not fun.

THIS CONCLUDES THE PARANORMAL PORTION OF TODAY’S PROGRAMMING

For now, though it’s not very paranormal, I wanted to share a few photos from our spectacular trip to Cancun, Mexico! For the rest of my artsy-fartsy Cancun photos, feel free to visit my Flickr page.

Paranormal Burnout…

Warning! Lots of opinionated comments and blabbering below…

As a teacher, I have learned to appreciate my well-deserved summers. I’m not one to take trips, go to the beach, socialize with friends, or probably most other activities that people engage in during the summer. And, because we have no children (other than the four-legged kind), I’m able to be selfish and go about whatever business I plan. On my spring break this year I planned out and conducted my two-week EVP experiment that many of you followed. When it ended I was already excitedly planning what I was going to do during the summer months, including ordering a big pile of books on the topic of spirit communication. With more time to be consistent, I would continue my EVP research. I could finally get tons of analysis of some previous paranormal investigations completed. I was also pumped to start thinking and planning some séance experiences for this fall. And… of course, I was very excited to blog my way through it all on The Big Séance.

Well, I’ve done most of these things. Unfortunately, the results of my recent EVP research would bore most of you. A lot of VERY quiet and VERY questionable moments that I continuously label as “possible” communication or “possible” EVP. I get nervous about the possibility of my hard drive filling to the max with these “possible” audio clips, and sorting through them and labeling them is becoming a chore. I’ve stopped saving so many of these and only make note of them. Either I’m doing something wrong or I’m not very patient. Or… maybe I’m not supposed to be an EVP master like Randall Keller. 🙂 It probably shouldn’t ruin my day, but sometimes after spending hours reviewing one session with no gems, it gets me down and I begin to wonder what the point is.

I’ve continued to occasionally experiment with radio sweep on my clock radio, which was brought on by possible (there’s that word again… see a theme here?) encouragement from spirit in a dream as well as an EVP response a while back. I’ve done more research with the spirit box, which I was very excited about, but have continued to be disappointed by, or maybe I’m just too skeptical about responses that may be coming through. Or… maybe I just need to get out of the house and record elsewhere. Or… maybe I just need to get out of the house. 🙂

By now I’ve read most of the books. One thing I didn’t consider is that these books would take me on a wild ride through several tangents and ITC topics that are interesting me. My mistake? I jumped right from one book to the next due to my addiction of knowledge and need to gain lots of it in a small amount of time. I didn’t stop to take a break between each book, or to even think about or attempt any of the concepts inside each individual book. Now that I’ve realized this, I plan on taking a step back. I’ll review each book by taking some notes, researching more of the techniques or concepts more deeply.

And finally, I’ve developed a kind of paranormal attitude that I’m not liking one bit. I’m a member of several online groups or circles of different paranormal and spiritual people and I’m learning a lot about other nerds and “crazies” like me. I find myself too easily criticizing the person who sees the obvious dust particle or reflection of the sun or a beam of light as the beautiful spirit orb whose name is Ralph, who is apparently in the photo to protect the person being photographed while sitting at their table at Applebees. Whaaaat?! “What you are seeing here in this water scrying example is a sprite. I also see a native American.” Why is there always a native American? And who am I to judge or get upset, anyway? I’m the one planning séances and sitting here waiting for my clock radio to talk to me based on a dream. And you should know that I’m interested in the spirit box. I’m interested in all things ITC. I want to be able to meditate successfully. I want to channel. I want to experience astral travel. I really want to hear and see what others do. As you may know, I’ve struggled to balance the “spiritual” nerd and the “paranormal” nerd inside myself. You may think there’s not a big difference, but trust me, they are completely different circles of people.

And so… I’ve decided I’m just burned out. Or maybe it’s just the July blues and I really need for school to start (and don’t worry, it will… less than two weeks away). Maybe I just need to get grounded and go be a “normal person” for a while. My friend Marilyn tells me I need to go and stick my feet in the dirt. Not a lot of dirt around here, but maybe she’s right. If you drive down my street and see me sitting in the yard looking like a patient from One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, perhaps staring off into the distance while chewing on a blade of grass, just wave and drive on by. If you’re invited to my home and you notice I’m hoarding chicken carcasses under the bed like the girl from Girl Interrupted… well… just call for help, please.

Last night I prayed to whoever would listen, perhaps my spirit guide, or my totem, or an Archangel, or maybe even Ralph. Hopefully someone can help me figure out what I’m supposed to do or not do. I hope you’ll understand if I take a blogging break for a while. You may even enjoy a break from reading it. 🙂

I hope I haven’t offended anyone. Am I still talking? (Are you still reading?)

Updates on My Summer: Spirit Box, Clock Radio, EVP Sessions, and More…

I have had a truly relaxing and lazy summer. Those who know me know that I don’t require much entertainment when I’m on vacation or have free time. The truth is, I usually don’t even like to leave the house. My little family here keeps me happy. 🙂 But, I have had some really nice highlights that include a vacation to the Smoky Mountains, a trip home to see the big family and tours of my hometown cemeteries, and of course, lots of reading. When I haven’t been lazy, I’ve spent many, many hours conducting EVP sessions, reviewing audio from those sessions, cemetery visits, and even evidence from an investigation that was months ago. But believe it or not, the school year is approaching and summer is on its way out for me. Preparations for a new year have already begun, both in my head and in the physical world, including the exciting task of writing more new curriculum.  And recently I’ve been contacted with some new and important cases involving a few families. There is always a “to do list”, but these cases will move up a bit in priority. Also, I’m excited to be thinking about and planning some séances with Marilyn Painter for this fall. Can’t wait! I hope I can keep up with it all and blog at the same time… Am I still talking? 🙂

Cemetery Recordings…

During my recent visits to cemeteries in my hometown, I recorded a couple of hours total of audio. I’ve found a few interesting things, but as usual, not as much as I’d hoped for. I’m still working my way through it so I’m not yet prepared to share anything.

Clock Radio & Spirit Box…

My clock radio and spirit box.

Those of you who have been following along this summer know that recently I had a dream about spirit contacting me through a clock radio… a clock radio similar to the one in my house growing up. My parents found it in the attic and I now have it in my possession. Before it was in my possession, however, during some EVP sessions I attempted to get some clarification or instructions on how I was supposed to use the device to achieve spirit communication. I have a few responses that are unclear. It is also interesting to note that in both of those sessions I had technical problems with both a microphone that I use and an unusual feedback from another recorder that I have NEVER heard before. This feedback seemed to always happen after questions and has a similar quality to the old school sounds of dialing up to an internet connection. Could it be the sounds of spirit working on fine-tuning the connection? I hope to post an example of this feedback soon so that someone techie might recognize what could be causing it, if anything.

I’ve done two or three experimental sessions with the clock radio, as well as the spirit box. Both of these pieces of equipment, at least for spirit communication purposes, involve a technique called “radio sweep”, which along with EVP fits under the umbrella of “ITC” (Instrumental Trans-Communication). It is a technique that I’ve read a lot about, but haven’t had a lot of experience with until recently.

As you may know, I’ve witnessed convincing evidence that spirits communicate with this technique (such as reading specific words or identifying items in a room), however, I’m still skeptical about many of the types of responses that many researchers claim to hear. For example, even though it sounds as if you’re getting a response (which are usually 1 syllable), is it just a voice from a passing frequency? I could just let my spirit box sweep through frequencies right now without engaging spirits or asking questions and hear multiple sounds that could resemble “yes” or “no” or any other frequent one-syllable answers (including numbers) that researchers claim to hear. Is the spirit using bits and pieces of someone else’s voice and words to form their own words? If so, how do some researchers claim to know the gender or number of spirits communicating based on the pitch or timbre of the voice? Or… will it be their own voice somehow floating in its own layer above the noise? And yes, sometimes it seems to just be noise. I’ve heard and read about answers to these questions, but I still just don’t know. Basically, I’m a bit conflicted and go back and forth with my opinions of the technique and the “responses” that I may or may not be getting. More to come, I suppose…

Enjoy the rest of summer! Peace!

A New EVP… Instructions About the Clock Radio?

Have you wondered why I haven’t posted many new EVP on here recently? Oh, that would be because I haven’t had much luck lately. True, I have slowed down a bit with my sessions at home, but I’ve also completed analysis of a few investigations as well as two cemetery recordings. Not much as far as EVP goes. At least nothing that I can confidently say is spirit communication. My excuse for slacking on my EVP sessions is due mainly to being backed up with footage and audio to analyze from investigations, and things like vacation, life happening, etc. Could it be true that being consistent is a big factor in spirit communication? I’d be lying if I told you I wasn’t disappointed. When I ran into an EVP drought months ago during my two-week EVP experiment, I got inspiration from Sarah Estep. I wish she or one of the other pioneer greats would show up with some wisdom for me right about now. 🙂

A New EVP…

But the good news is this. Two nights ago I decided to record a short session while I relaxed on the bed in the bedroom while alone in the house. It was late at night and so it was pretty quiet. I usually conduct sessions at my desk in the loft. I also usually use two recorders. This time I did not. It is important to note that around six minutes into this session I twice asked for a knock in the room to validate that a presence was with me. I got a knock each time. It had been a while since I’d received such knocking communication and I wondered if it was the return of my rapper. With that being said, after the two single knocks I asked for further validation and got nothing.

Just before this possible EVP was captured (about eight minutes into the session), I was asking about the dream that I mentioned in an earlier post. The dream seemed to be spirit letting me know they were aware of my research. This dream also involved clear communication with a clock radio like the one I remember having in the house when I was younger. After the discussion in the comments from that post, I’ve been left wondering whether the clock radio was just symbolism or if I’m really supposed to try it. (By the way, my parents found it in the attic of their house. It is exactly like the one pictured in the dream post. I’ll be picking it up when I visit this weekend.) In the session, I had just asked “Is that something I’m supposed to try?” (I was referring to the clock radio.) As usual, I have no clue what may be communicated here. Your feedback is welcome.

Is that something I’m supposed to try?

*Full Disclosure (I wish WordPress had a teeny tiny font size)

I’m probably not supposed to tell you this because skeptics will take it and run. And… (sigh)… I know I’m sometimes too openly skeptic with my own work, therefore I probably end up missing true examples of spirit communication. However, I just can’t NOT be honest. Though it was very quiet in the room, and though I have gotten pretty good at calling out or “tagging” strange noises from the environment during sessions, I have to tell you that Meril (our 4 legged son… name pronounced like “Meryl” Streep, thank you very much) was relaxing in his kennel just a few feet away from the recorder on the night stand. I didn’t tag anything in the audio and I don’t recall hearing strange noises coming from him.

Spirit Communication through a Clock Radio…

Last night I had another dream. It was the first night of being back in my own bed after several days in a cabin on vacation. Since it is summer and I’m sleeping more, I guess I’m going to wake up remembering them more frequently.

Here we go…

First of all, I was younger and single, and I was playing the role of myself in some other reality, I suppose. I was staying at a friend’s house. I don’t believe this friend exists in real life, but I do know the house resembled something you’d see on Hoarders, so apparently OCD wasn’t a concern of mine in this alternate reality. I was also doing my laundry there, but I’m not sure why. Doesn’t matter. Anyway…

So we were all just hanging out in this friend’s (very messy) bedroom, and he was showing us how a spirit very often spoke to him through his clock radio. As if he was Marcello Bacci (a notable ITC researcher most famous for contacting spirit through a radio), he stood next to his device on his night stand, twisting dials. I don’t remember there being much static or other noise, but after a while there was suddenly a clear voice that communicated with us all in the room. The part about the dream that blew my mind was that the voice mentioned me by name and knew of me, saying he was aware of my attempts to communicate with spirit. I couldn’t wait to get a clock radio of my own to try it out at home, especially since the spirit world was apparently aware of me and was trying so hard to contact me from their side.

I don’t remember much else, but I woke up incredibly disappointed when I realized I didn’t have a clock radio like my friend had in the dream. I can remember what it looked like though.

This is pretty close to the clock radio from my dream, except there was a speaker on the right of the face.

This is a pretty close representation of what was in my dream. We had one just like this growing up, only in my dream I clearly remember there being a plastic grill for a speaker on the right side of the face.

Was this me being just as big of a dork in my dream as I am in real life? Or… should I be ordering one of these off of eBay?

Memories of the Stanley Hotel…

Several nights ago I took one of my digital audio recorders to bed with me. This, of course, was to see if I could catch spirit voices while I slept. Randall Keller calls these “sleep studies”. They take days/weeks to review. I’ve been managing to listen to about 30 minutes a day. These recordings are definitely not recommended for everyone, because I know several people who would instantly move out of their house if they discovered a voice was talking to them through the recorder on their bed stand. You guys know me well enough by now to know that if I hear that voice I’ll offer them a drink. 🙂

All of this got me thinking about the last time I did a recording while I slept. It was overnight at the Stanley Hotel with Missouri Spirit Seekers (aka my family) about a year ago.

My thoughts (and some of the audio) from a year ago…

MOSS stayed at the Stanley Hotel from March 12th – 15th, 2011. Our rooms were located on the infamous stretch of the 4th floor, rooms 408, 410, and 412 (my room).

Besides Cassie experiencing being touched twice, we are not able to report that we saw or heard any activity. Others around us, however, were claiming to experience activity while we were there. The day we left there was an interesting experience with the maid who was cleaning the room across from 412. She ran out into the hall upset and slammed the door. She was frantically telling the other maid down the hall that something was going on in the room.

Haunted or not haunted, the history and beauty of the Stanley was worth the trip for me. My favorite part was walking through the main lobby late at night and being the only ones there. The fireplaces lit and crackling, classical music being pumped through the sound system 24/7, ball room, billiard room, and music room available to walk through freely. It was fun to imagine being in a different time.

One of the things that makes visiting the Stanley for the purpose of its haunted history challenging is that unless you’ve rented out the entire hotel, many other fascinated people are there for the same reason. Some of these people are incredibly… interesting. There are people going up and down the halls at all hours of the night trying to catch a glimpse of the ghosts of the children that supposedly haunted our hallway. While we were there each day, every couple of hours a group of anywhere from 10 to 30 people in a tour would come down the hall to hear the guide tell stories. They would occasionally visit some of the rooms if they were vacant. Some of the guides encouraged the spirits to interact with guests in the tour and several people claimed to have experiences.

A door shutting out in the hallway sounds incredibly loud and seemed to happen at all hours of the night. Guests? Ghosts? Conversations from any of the rooms could be heard from out in the hallway. Floors creak, wind howls, and it is impossible to know exactly what you are hearing.

The audio files below are not meant to be evidence of anything, only some interesting audio from my night stand in 412 while we were sleeping. I must note that TAPS and Ghost Adventures have investigated room 412 for poltergeist activity. One of my nights in the room was uncomfortable only because I found one of the videos of investigations of my room and watched it on my phone right before going to bed. Otherwise, room 412 was a peaceful getaway.

AUDIO: An example of the howling wind in the middle of the night… very Shining-like.

AUDIO: Whistle in the middle of the night…

This one is interesting.  Was I whistling a tune while snoring? Did this whistle come from outside the window 3 floors down in the middle of the night? Was someone out in the hallway whistling? Who knows.

AUDIO: Knocks in the middle of the night...

I have NO clue what this sound is but it seems awfully close to the recorder on my night stand. This was also in the middle of the night.

AUDIO: Early morning thuds…

This was early in the morning about 40 minutes before my alarm went off to get ready for breakfast. This could possibly just be the floor creaking from someone next door or across the hall moving about. Or, possibly someone from the past was pacing in my room waiting for me to wake up.

AUDIO: Exit door thud…

This is just an example of a noise we think we’ve identified as the exit door at the end of the hallway and right next to my room (412). We noticed that it is easily left unlatched, and a few times during our stay we noticed it opening and closing in the wind by itself. This thud sound happened many times throughout the night, especially when the wind picked up.
