Learn How to Record EVP: The Session – The Big Séance Podcast: My Paranormal World #28

big seance podcast, banner

Are you fascinated by the EVP examples you hear on your favorite paranormal television shows? Have you ever wanted to learn just how to conduct an EVP session? Or maybe you’re already actively involved in an area of spirit communication, but you’d like to learn about someone else’s process and hear a new perspective on EVP. In this episode, I share the techniques that I’ve learned and use in my research on Electronic Voice Phenomena.

How to Record EVP: The Session

There are many many ways of recording for and capturing EVP. For decades, people all over the world have successfully recorded spirit voices in their own individual way. There are basic techniques and there are techniques that are rather complicated, some requiring more equipment and more explanation. There are also techniques that due to times changing and new technology, are just outdated.

My experiences with EVP began as a paranormal investigator, but more recently it comes from research and conducting various experiments and seances, mostly in my home.

I want to make it clear that my intention for this episode is to share how I typically go about recording for EVP during experiments in my own home, specifically. The process might be a bit different during a paranormal investigation, especially if you are investigating with a group.

And before I really get into my process, I have to give some credit to the following researchers/authors who have influenced me in recent years: the late Sarah Estep, one of America’s great EVP pioneers; Tom and Lisa Butler, directors of Association TransCommunication; and Randall Keller, a wise and experienced researcher who has been a great mentor. And he’s also a former guest of the podcast, from Episode #8 from August 14, 2014. A lot of what I know and the “how to” came directly from these folks in one way or another.

My technique for recording EVP

Determine your location/recording environment

  • Quiet and comfortable
  • Avoid bad energy/pick a feel good place
  • Be familiar with your surroundings (noises and sounds)
  • Ideally, you will want to record when you are alone in the house or location
  • Document the location and details of others in the house if you’re not alone.
  • Pick a time of day where the neighborhood (if that is an issue for you) is at its quietest.
  • Document specific equipment you’re using (if it’s out of the ordinary).
  • Document anything you may be trying or changing as far as technique goes.
  • Document anything odd in your surroundings for a session.

Recorders and their placement

  • Use a digital audio recorder with USB capabilities
  • I use the Sony ICD PX-820 and Sony ICD PX-720, and they’re nearly identical. They’re also old models, so don’t go looking for them on Amazon, unless you’re wanting a used one. I also use a nicer and techier Tascam DR-07 with an external Tascam microphone.
  • In my opinion, it is important to use two recorders at the same time for sessions. These recorders should be different models or brands. This may help you to rule out questionable sounds that could be picked up or more easily explained in another recorder.
  • EVP are not often recorded in multiple recorders at one time. If I hear something or a voice out-of-place in one recorder, but not in the other, I’m more likely to believe it is truly paranormal and possibly an EVP.
  • Place your recorders near you, probably on opposite sides of the room, but far enough away where you won’t hear your every breath.
  • Using headphones or ear buds? Maybe. Maybe not.

Advice for saving time and frustration later

  • Starting both recorders at the same time (or close to it) will be very helpful when comparing time stamps during analysis.
  • Get in the habit of “tagging” while investigating or during an EVP session.

Just before the session

  • Brief meditation or prayer.
  • State intentions. I invite spirits/guides/loved ones to help in sending or inviting appropriate spirits to help with research and to learn about life on the other side.
  • Sometimes before a session I’ll simply play relaxation or meditation music lightly in the background to help me chill out.
  • Be in a good place or frame of mind when practicing any form of spirit communication.

The Actual EVP Session

  • Click record and allow for at least 30 seconds of silence.
  • Re-state verbal request for protection/invitation
  • State the date and time
  • Briefly describe the equipment used and where it is placed
  • Document anything unusual in the environment
  • Once again state intentions
  • Begin by asking some basic identifying questions.
  • Give 100% respect
  • Don’t interrogate.
  • Don’t assume you’re smarter because you’re alive.
  • Don’t assume they want or need your help.
  • Don’t assume they’re miserable.
  • Don’t assume they’re “earthbound”, troubled, or in need of help.
  • Do not jump to the conclusion that because you’ve captured an EVP, your home is haunted. Some very impressive and historic examples of spirit communication have come from spirits reporting to be communicating from a kind of station used for communicating from the other side.
  • Further questions might be more specific, possibly relate to a specific spirit, or be no different than elements of a conversation you’d have with a living person.
  • Allow plenty of time (20 to 30 seconds) in between questions.
  • If you have a complicated or deep question in mind, consider breaking it up into smaller chunks.

If you experience activity during the session

  • I don’t always instigate it, but as you may know from a previous episode of the podcast, often I get spirits who like to let me know of their presence by knocks or “rapping”. I guess it’s just the best way for some spirits to communicate with me. When this happens, I roll with it, and I try to continue the communication through the rapping. In my opinion, this kind of communication is just as fascinating and noteworthy as EVP.
  • Sometimes at the end of a session I’ll ask for some kind of validation through touch or the moving of an object. If you’re comfortable with it, why not ask? I know that when I get two or three loud knocks or raps when I ask for it, or if I ever capture a recorder being moved across the table, I’ll be way more likely to be confident about any EVP captured in that session.
  • To hear examples from my sessions where I communicate with spirits through rapping and knocking, be sure to listen to Episode #6 from July 30, 2014

Before ending a session

  • Give any spirits present the opportunity to give feedback or suggestions to make the research, or the communication in general, more successful.
  • Thank those present for their energy and presence and invite them to return for future sessions.

I think my sessions are longer than most people prefer. A typical session for me is 15 to 20 minutes. Just remember that depending on how thorough you are during the analysis of your audio recordings, it will take at the very least twice as long to listen and analyze as it took to record. Some of my more complicated and longer sessions can take a day or more to get through. And that’s just with one recorder. You get the picture.

Other techniques and tools that you can combine with your EVP session

  • The use of background noise, such as “white” or “pink noise”, or even taking advantage of explainable noises in the environment. Many believe, and some are convinced, that using background noise during EVP sessions may help entities to communicate.
  • I will sometimes use a “spirit box” or any device that will help me practice the “radio sweep” method of capturing what is an example of “opportunistic EVP”. Avoid falling for pareidolia.
  • One last tool that I tend to use now, won’t surprise most of you at all. But I will also spend some time in my session, often by myself, but sometimes with a partner, using the Ouija board. As of this date, after around 3 years of occasional use of the Ouija, I’ve yet to experience or capture movement on the board. With that being said, I have captured a possible EVP that I’ve shared with listeners in a past episode. This communication seems to say “Ouijee… board” after I asked “what am I touching” during a Ouija session. Pretty cool, if you ask me. That was in Episode #5 from July 23rd, 2014, and was my first interview with Karen A. Dahlman.

So as you can see… there are so many things you can do with an EVP session. You can have a very basic session, or you can be very detailed, go crazy with it, and pretty much make a full-time study of it. But as I always say, as long as you’re being respectful and have good positive intentions, there’s nothing wrong with it. Just be smart and have fun.

Perhaps in a future episode, I’ll get into how you can listen to and analyze your recordings, in search of those possible spirit voices.

Haunted Summer Reading Part One

I wanted to share with you a reblog, which happens to be my very first guest blog post, from News From The Spirit World. Please enjoy Haunted Summer Reading Part One and look for Part Two at Newsfromthespiritworld.com soon.

Video Part 2: Highlights from our 9/15/12 Séance…

It is finally time to reveal the highlights of our two and a half hour September 15, 2012  séance. I’d like to thank Marilyn Painter at Ahtah Sanctuary Holistic Center in St. Peters, Missouri for sharing her time and talents with us for this project.

If you haven’t been following along, here is some of the previously shared information. Marilyn beautifully announced our intention that evening with the following words.

”We set our intention tonight to bring forth those from the past who have an interest in bringing forth evidence to this physical world that spirit exists – that we as human beings, divine human beings are able to make connections and to communicate with those in spirit. Our intention tonight is also to bring forth, without a shadow of a doubt, evidence and proof that we are divine beings of light.”

Our invited spirit pioneers included Sarah Estep, Thomas Alva Edison, Helen Duncan, Konstantin Raudive, and Eileen Garrett.

Some details regarding the “experiment” part of our séance…

Throughout the two and a half hour séance, I documented changes in EMF (electromagnetic field) and temperature. Also, along with recording the evening with multiple video cameras, I had two digital audio recorders in the room. My intention was to hopefully capture some EVP (electronic voice phenomena) as well.

It is important to note that there were absolutely no EMF readings during the séance. I spent a lot of time charting temperature changes in the room and it seemed to rise and fall predictably and gradually as the air conditioning in the room turned on and off. I do not feel like any of the temperature changes were out of the ordinary or “paranormal”.  And, although I have a few artifacts of what could possibly be spirit voices captured on audio, I am not comfortable with making any claims about them or sharing them with the public. At least not now.

Here is the Part 1 video…

…with an introduction and information on how we prepared for the evening. This was shared previously.

And here is Part 2…

I welcome your thoughts and comments. Please enjoy!

If you enjoyed following this séance, stay tuned for information on the séance we had on Saturday, September 29, 2012.

Peace!

Communicating with Great Pioneers through Séance…

On Saturday September 15th, Marilyn and I, along with two other sitters, held our first of two séances for this fall. A more detailed report and a video of the evening will be coming soon. But for now, are you interested in a preview?

Our Intention for the Evening…

Marilyn beautifully announced our intention that evening with the following words.

“We set our intention tonight to bring forth those from the past who have an interest in bringing forth evidence to this physical world that spirit exists – that we as human beings, divine human beings are able to make connections and to communicate with those in spirit. Our intention tonight is also to bring forth, without a shadow of a doubt, evidence and proof that we are divine beings of light.”

Our Invited Spirits…

Sarah Estep

(This is the photo that was used during the séance.)

During the séance, I asked Sarah the following question. “Sarah, your book, Voices of Eternity, has inspired me and many others. I think all of us here are probably very anxious to find the answers to some of the same questions that you were asking of the other side before you crossed over. Can you share some of what you’ve learned since crossing over?”

Thomas Alva Edison

The inventor, Thomas Alva Edison.
(This is the photo that was used during the séance.)

During the séance, I asked Thomas the following question. “Just before crossing over, you mentioned to your physician ‘It is very beautiful over there’. Can you describe what you were seeing and what we should expect to see when we cross over?”

Helen Duncan

Medium, Helen Duncan.
(This is the photo that was used during the séance.)

With her experiences with physical mediumship, Helen was asked if there was some kind of physical phenomena that she could produce for us.

Konstantin Raudive

Parapsychologist and EVP researcher, Konstantin Raudive.
(This is the photo that was used during the séance.)

Konstantin greeted us with so much information that we didn’t even get to a specific question for him.

Eileen Garrett

Medium and parapsychologist, Eileen Garrett.
(This is the photo that was used during the séance.)

During the séance, I asked Eileen the following question. “As a medium, you were involved with a lot of scientific experiments. Your health was reportedly affected by many of your trance sessions. Can you tell us anything you learned about the well-being of people on earth working in the paranormal or spiritual fields? Are there safety concerns?”

The History Books: Is nothing happening? Or is it time for an update?

Bill O’Neil and Spiricom

In many of the books I read, authors discuss the major breakthroughs in paranormal research, specifically EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomenon) and ITC (Instrumental Trans Communication). There is usually a rather large section devoted to crediting Friedrich Juergenson for discovering EVP, even though some would credit individuals from a decade or so before. They then move onto praising Konstantin Raudive for his work with the subject. I always get disappointed when there isn’t as much focus or credit given to Sarah Estep, but there’s almost always at least a statement about her founding the AA-EVP, which is now ATransC (Association TransCommunication). Often there are complete chapters devoted to developments in ITC and EVP from the 1970s and 80s. There was a lot going on. Since I was young, and since this topic wasn’t even on my radar during that time period, I can only imagine how exciting it was to be involved with groundbreaking developments like spiricom or communication with the Timestream group.

Maybe I’m reading the wrong books, or maybe they’re just all outdated, but with the possible exception of the Scole group’s work in the 1990s, the history books seem to mostly end the timeline at the end of the 1980s. Maybe they just ran out of room on the page? I’ve highlighted so many examples of spirit communication from spirit teams on the other side with prophesies of how great progress would be happening in the future, or about how communication with the other side would continue to improve. In some of these older books you almost get the picture that the author fully expected us to have access to an elevator that just takes us right to the other side for face to face communication by now. Surely with our iPhones and tablets we should have been able to just stop on the side of the road in the car, pull out the bag phone from under the seat, pull up the antenna, and place a call to our ancestors in 1995. What has really improved besides us walking around for a decade with spirit boxes and digital recorders? Where is Timestream now?

Obviously we’ve been experiencing a decade or more of the current great paranormal craze. There are amazing researchers and experimenters out there. There have been many improvements in technology since Juergenson. More and more people are becoming enlightened to spiritual and paranormal topics. So… where does all of this fit in the history books? Where is the chapter for 2000 and beyond… and who is in it? Will paranormal reality TV stars be the next names to go down in history?  (Am I still talking?)

Just a thought…

Report Published in Association TransCommunication News Journal

I am very excited to tell you that the report from my Two-Week EVP Experiment from this last Spring was just published in the Summer issue of the Association TransCommunication News Journal. I’d like to sincerely thank Lisa and Tom Butler for including it and believing it was interesting enough to publish. 🙂

I’ve mentioned ATransC and several of the researchers and books associated with this very important group many times in this blog. If you’re interested in EVP, ITC, or any form of spirit communication at all, you should definitely check out their site and the huge wealth of knowledge and resources that are there. You may even want to consider joining. In one way or another, ATransC has played a very big role in this still very new but exciting journey that I’m on.

I’m not yet aware of a link to the online version of this issue, but if you’re interested, the report is very similar to “The EVP Experiment” that is linked above.

By the way! If it’s HOT where you are now, I hope you’re staying safe and COOL, especially if you’re on the East or West coast of the United States. I know I have several friends and readers affected by the extreme weather conditions going on right now. It’s pretty miserable and dry here in Missouri, but we don’t have much to complain about from what I’m hearing and seeing from many of you.

Thanks for visiting and reading!

Peace!

A New EVP… Instructions About the Clock Radio?

Have you wondered why I haven’t posted many new EVP on here recently? Oh, that would be because I haven’t had much luck lately. True, I have slowed down a bit with my sessions at home, but I’ve also completed analysis of a few investigations as well as two cemetery recordings. Not much as far as EVP goes. At least nothing that I can confidently say is spirit communication. My excuse for slacking on my EVP sessions is due mainly to being backed up with footage and audio to analyze from investigations, and things like vacation, life happening, etc. Could it be true that being consistent is a big factor in spirit communication? I’d be lying if I told you I wasn’t disappointed. When I ran into an EVP drought months ago during my two-week EVP experiment, I got inspiration from Sarah Estep. I wish she or one of the other pioneer greats would show up with some wisdom for me right about now. 🙂

A New EVP…

But the good news is this. Two nights ago I decided to record a short session while I relaxed on the bed in the bedroom while alone in the house. It was late at night and so it was pretty quiet. I usually conduct sessions at my desk in the loft. I also usually use two recorders. This time I did not. It is important to note that around six minutes into this session I twice asked for a knock in the room to validate that a presence was with me. I got a knock each time. It had been a while since I’d received such knocking communication and I wondered if it was the return of my rapper. With that being said, after the two single knocks I asked for further validation and got nothing.

Just before this possible EVP was captured (about eight minutes into the session), I was asking about the dream that I mentioned in an earlier post. The dream seemed to be spirit letting me know they were aware of my research. This dream also involved clear communication with a clock radio like the one I remember having in the house when I was younger. After the discussion in the comments from that post, I’ve been left wondering whether the clock radio was just symbolism or if I’m really supposed to try it. (By the way, my parents found it in the attic of their house. It is exactly like the one pictured in the dream post. I’ll be picking it up when I visit this weekend.) In the session, I had just asked “Is that something I’m supposed to try?” (I was referring to the clock radio.) As usual, I have no clue what may be communicated here. Your feedback is welcome.

Is that something I’m supposed to try?

Original, Unenhanced Audio

Enhanced Audio

More Enhancing and Slowed Down

*Full Disclosure (I wish WordPress had a teeny tiny font size)

I’m probably not supposed to tell you this because skeptics will take it and run. And… (sigh)… I know I’m sometimes too openly skeptic with my own work, therefore I probably end up missing true examples of spirit communication. However, I just can’t NOT be honest. Though it was very quiet in the room, and though I have gotten pretty good at calling out or “tagging” strange noises from the environment during sessions, I have to tell you that Meril (our 4 legged son… name pronounced like “Meryl” Streep, thank you very much) was relaxing in his kennel just a few feet away from the recorder on the night stand. I didn’t tag anything in the audio and I don’t recall hearing strange noises coming from him.

What did you learn at school today?

Nerd.

Wasn’t it the most dreaded question growing up? You had just gotten off the bus and were SO PUMPED to go up to the attic to play office or library… or maybe you couldn’t wait to kick back on the couch with a Little Debbie (Star Crunches were my favorite) to watch the latest Donahue or Oprah episode (although that was usually only if 3-2-1 Contact was a repeat). No? Maybe that was just me (actually, that doesn’t even come close to the nerdiest things I did… I hope my family doesn’t read this one). Anyway, back to my point. The dreaded question… “What did you learn at school today?” always came when you least expected it… and no one was ever happy with the answer, were they?

About mid-way into my formal 2-week EVP experiment, Tom and Lisa Butler of the Association TransCommunication (ATransC, formerly AA-EVP), showed interest in my experiment and asked if I would submit a report on the experiment, my challenges, and “what I learned”. This is the association that was founded by Sarah Estep, whose book inspired me to conduct the experiment in the first place. I was (and still am) so very honored and excited just to be asked.  Documenting my inspiration, the process, the outcome… that was the fun part… the cool part! I did that weeks ago. What did I learn? That’s where I’ve been stuck. WHY AM I STUCK? It’s one of the coolest things I’ve done. It was a great experience. In fact, I haven’t stopped the experiment. I’m not recording at the same intense pace, but I think it’s something I’ll do on a somewhat regular basis for a long time. I KNOW I learned something. Sometimes I feel I’ve learned so much in the last several years that I don’t know what to do with it all.

After some thought, I’ve come to the conclusion that maybe I’m struggling with this question because I was somewhat disappointed in the general results. I didn’t record a hard drive full of EVP like Randall Keller or Sarah Estep. However, I have since recorded several more EVP (or at least probable EVP) and that has gotten me excited again. Apparently, I have some spirit collaborators that have taken notice and are willing to help me out. So… is “patience” what I learned? “Patience” might get me one sentence. Did I gain an EVP addiction?

Maybe I just have a fear of the question. I know you’re just dying to find out, refreshing my blog hourly to see what knowledge I gained. 🙂 I’ll get crackin’ and keep you posted………………………………

Hmmm… Those of you who tuned in for much of my experiment, what did YOU learn? (Can you see me leaning over to check out your homework? I’m only interested because I want to know if I did it correctly. Yup… I was that kid too.)

🙂
