Some Harsh Words for EVP Research…

The following is a portion of a letter from John L. Randall that was sent to Callum E. Cooper and included in his recent book, Telephone Calls from the Dead. This portion actually has more to do with EVP than phone calls from spirits, but it jumped out at me and I flagged it. John L. Randall (who passed away in 2011 not long after writing this) was a biologist and a member of the UK’s Society of Psychical Research. In this letter, Randall was critiquing anomalous phone calls in general.

“I must confess that I am ninety-eight per cent sceptical when it comes to anything in the field of EVP. I read Raudive’s book when it first came out… I didn’t bother to keep it for my collection. None of his ‘voices’ conveyed anything approaching extended conversation. It struck me that if you are prepared to ransack all the languages of the world you are bound to find a few isolated words which will match up to any random noise on your tape-recorder. By choosing the right language you can even make the ‘voices’ say whatever you want them to say. A noise such as ‘mer’ for example, could be English (a female horse) or French (mother or sea). In playing this game you have plenty of scope for innovation!”

I’ve been finding that I am more critical of EVP than many, but OUCH! Tell us how you really feel! 🙂

The History Books: Is nothing happening? Or is it time for an update?

Bill O’Neil and Spiricom

In many of the books I read, authors discuss the major breakthroughs in paranormal research, specifically EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomenon) and ITC (Instrumental Trans Communication). There is usually a rather large section devoted to crediting Friedrich Juergenson for discovering EVP, even though some would credit individuals from a decade or so before. They then move onto praising Konstantin Raudive for his work with the subject. I always get disappointed when there isn’t as much focus or credit given to Sarah Estep, but there’s almost always at least a statement about her founding the AA-EVP, which is now ATransC (Association TransCommunication). Often there are complete chapters devoted to developments in ITC and EVP from the 1970s and 80s. There was a lot going on. Since I was young, and since this topic wasn’t even on my radar during that time period, I can only imagine how exciting it was to be involved with groundbreaking developments like spiricom or communication with the Timestream group.

Maybe I’m reading the wrong books, or maybe they’re just all outdated, but with the possible exception of the Scole group’s work in the 1990s, the history books seem to mostly end the timeline at the end of the 1980s. Maybe they just ran out of room on the page? I’ve highlighted so many examples of spirit communication from spirit teams on the other side with prophesies of how great progress would be happening in the future, or about how communication with the other side would continue to improve. In some of these older books you almost get the picture that the author fully expected us to have access to an elevator that just takes us right to the other side for face to face communication by now. Surely with our iPhones and tablets we should have been able to just stop on the side of the road in the car, pull out the bag phone from under the seat, pull up the antenna, and place a call to our ancestors in 1995. What has really improved besides us walking around for a decade with spirit boxes and digital recorders? Where is Timestream now?

Obviously we’ve been experiencing a decade or more of the current great paranormal craze. There are amazing researchers and experimenters out there. There have been many improvements in technology since Juergenson. More and more people are becoming enlightened to spiritual and paranormal topics. So… where does all of this fit in the history books? Where is the chapter for 2000 and beyond… and who is in it? Will paranormal reality TV stars be the next names to go down in history?  (Am I still talking?)

Just a thought…

Raudive – Soon It Will Work Everywhere!

This post is and update for those of you that have been following my thoughts and experiences with my clock radio. This began with a dream I had about a spirit loudly and clearly communicating to me with the clock radio that I remembered from my childhood. If you’d like to catch up on related posts, you can read Spirit Communication through a Clock Radio, A New EVP… Instructions About the Clock Radio?, and Updates on My Summer: Spirit Box, Clock Radio, EVP Sessions, and More

A few nights ago I was reading the book Breakthroughs in Technical Spirit Communication by Dr. Theo Locher and Maggy Harsch-Fischbach (1997). In a chapter about Maggie and her husband’s ITC experiences, she mentions an experience they had with their clock radio.

“…my husband and I were listening to music on the small clock radio. We wanted to set the alarm when unexpectedly the music stopped and a rushing sound set in. We looked at each other startled. Suddenly there was a click followed by a deep voice:

‘This is Konstantin Raudive, soon it will work everywhere!’

Raudive is one of the most important and earliest pioneers of EVP research. Well, I got so excited that I jumped out of bed just to grab a highlighter to mark the paragraph!

First of Many EVP Sessions in the Next Two Weeks…

Sarah Estep in her office conducting an EVP session

As I mentioned in my last post, I’ve been very excited and have looked forward to conducting and hopefully chronicling an EVP session daily for the next two weeks. In the last few years I have occasionally conducted these recording sessions in my home, but I’ve not been very consistent. Consistency is very important. Sarah Estep, who was a pioneer in the study of EVP (electronic voice phenomena), conducted EVP sessions almost daily and documented them. Her book Voices of Eternity inspired me to take this two-week journey… and this journey started today.

There are best practices in doing routine EVP sessions, and I’ve done my best to follow them. You can find some of these best practices along with lots of information about EVP at ATransC.org (Association TransCommunication). I’ve not had a lot of success with EVP sessions from home, but experts will tell you that the more you conduct them and the more consistent you are, the better your chances will be of documenting clear spirit communication.

At the risk of having a Geraldo Rivera/Al Capone moment, below are the details of my EVP Sesssion for 3/13/12 that began at approximately 2:30pm.

For this session I used a Tascam DR-07 digital audio recorder, along with a Tascam TM-ST1 stereo microphone (after today I plan on additionally using a Sony PX-820 digital audio recorder at the same time) in conjunction with a pair of headsets to hopefully allow for 2-way real-time communication. For portions of this session, using my computer, I played white noise, pink noise, and brown noise as additional background noise. For another portion of the session I used Stefan Bion’s EVP Maker (which I use to create background noise using my voice… I recorded myself reading a couple of paragraphs out of a book and then the program jumbles up that recording and plays it back so that nothing is recognizable) from 80ms to 120ms with Z-Cross and with the speed control set to 122%. For the last portion of the session I played the recording “Heartsounds” by David Lanz.

Before starting the session I meditated briefly and asked for assistance from spirit guides and explained my intentions.

After starting the recording I always allow time for communication before I speak. I then explained that I would be recording daily for two weeks with the intention of learning about EVP/Spirit Communication and the Spirit World/Afterlife/The Other Side. I would share my findings with others. No background sounds added yet.

I asked “Is there anyone from the spirit world present with me today?” And then a minute later… “Today I’d like to request the assistance of any spirit guides, Merlin, and loved ones who have passed, and I’d like to make a special request that someone please help bring in Sarah Estep for today’s EVP session.” A few seconds later… “Is Sarah Estep available?” Moments later I again asked if there was anyone present. I also asked if anyone was able to reach Sarah Estep. I mentioned that there were other EVP pioneers and experts that I’d love to communicate with as well if she wasn’t available. I mentioned I’d been reading Sarah’s book Voices of Eternity and that it inspired me to conduct this series of EVP sessions.

At 5:42 into the recording I mentioned that I would begin using the different background noises to possibly help with communication. I urged any entities present to communicate and let me know what works, what doesn’t, and what I could do to make it more successful. I then started the white noise audio. For each different background noise I gradually tried different volume levels.

At 8:35 into the recording I started the pink noise audio. A minute later I asked “Are there any messages you’d like to pass on today to others here on Earth?” At 10:15 into the recording… “In Sarah Estep’s book she mentioned that she learned that having a mirror near the recording device was helpful in reaching communication. Can you tell me if that’s true? Will a mirror help?” A few moments later.. “Where do I need a mirror if this is the case?”

At 11:40 into the recording I started the brown noise audio and urged any entities present to please continue trying to communicate. A moment later… “Can you tell me what volume works best?” A minute later… “Can you tell me if there is a time of day that is more convenient to record EVP or spirit communication?” I explained that I knew there was supposedly no concept of time on the other side, but I was interested in finding out if there was an earthly time that was better for recording EVP.

At 14:33 I started the EVP Maker and again asked if there was anyone present with me. At 16:00 into the recording I asked if the pitch or the speed of the file being played made a difference.

At 17:15 into the recording I started the David Lanz recording and again invited anyone present to please communicate. Two minutes later I asked “What can you tell me about this music? Do you enjoy this music?”

At 20 minutes into the recording I stopped the music and announced that I would be ending the session and asked if there were any last messages that needed to be passed on. A few moments later I decided to ask if it was possible for anyone present to make a knock, noise, or a thud in the room to let me know they were present. I also suggested moving an object in the room if that was possible.

A minute later I asked anyone present to let me know of anything I could do to make these sessions more successful.

Lastly, at 22:20 I asked anyone present to invite others from the light in the coming days and weeks to help. I thanked them for their presence, their energy, and their help before signing off.

After listening to this session twice I did not hear any obvious EVPs. I’m hoping that the focused and consistent recording in the next few weeks will change that. In the event I do hear EVPs I will be using the below classification system used by Sarah Estep, ATransC, and believed to be developed by Konstantin Raudive. This summary is from ATransC.org.

Class “A” voices can be heard and identified by anyone with normal hearing and knowledge of the language spoken; no special training of the ear is needed to detect them.

There are several hundred microphone-voices amongst my recordings that fall into this group. It is easy to make tape copies of “A” voices, and they can be repeated as often as desired. Thus, I have analysed roughly 25,000 voices according to speech content, language and rhythm. By this method of repetition, the acoustic reality of the voices can be established beyond doubt, and hallucinations of the ear are excluded.

Class “B” voices speak more rapidly and more softly, but are still quite plainly audible to a trained and attentive ear. The ability to differentiate increases with practice, but this is a slow and wearisome process. For this reason it is difficult to use non-regular participants for experimental purposes with class “B” voices.

Class “C” consists of the most interesting voices; voices that give us a great deal of information and much paranormal data. Unfortunately, these can be heard only in fragments, even by a trained ear, but with improved technical aids, it may eventually become possible to hear and demonstrate these voices, which lie beyond our range of hearing, without trouble. This grading and my comments are but a rough guide in the present stage of our approach to the psycho-acoustic aspect of the investigation.

Communicating with Dead Celebrities and the Famous…

Marilyn Monroe

Everything that I have read leads me to believe that when famous people cross over they lose much of their celebrity status on the other side. And if there is no presence of the ego there then they won’t mind being pulled back down to “earth” anyway. But if we choose or plan our journeys before each incarnation for the purposes of learning and growing, and if some choose particularly challenging paths, then I’d imagine people might reach out to those spirits while on the other side to learn from them. Why not try to do the same while we’re alive? Are all celebrities or famous spirits available to communicate or be channeled?

Here are just some of the celebrities that have been known to either communicate with mediums and researchers or be channeled throughout the years.

Richard Burton

Elvis Presley
Marilyn Monroe
Jimi Hendrix
Richard Burton (who Sylvia Browne claims is still earthbound and has no intention of crossing over)
Audrey Hepburn

Then we have the modern pioneers of EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomena) research. These spirits have been known to reach out to communicate to many EVP researchers, mediums, spirit circles, etc.

Sarah Estep
Friedrich Jürgenson
Konstantin Raudive
Thomas Edison (had an interest in spirit communication and even tried to develop tools to help researchers while he was alive)

And, of course, Biblical figures as well…

What dead celebrities would you love to communicate with?

Jimi Hendrix
