She was then co-host for episode 17, which was one of our special Halloween episodes, and she had contributions in episodes 19 and 24. Today she gets the stage, once again, all by herself, though it’s a different book this time. We’re going to be talking about her first book, The Spirit of Creativity: Embodying Your Soul’s Passion.

Dream Haven

I’m curious. Do any of you have your own personal oasis or room that you go to in your head for meditation purposes, for example? I recall seeing exercises or being prompted in a canned meditation to go to that very personal Zen space. Maybe from there you meet your guide or passed loved ones. Perhaps some of you use this imaginary space strictly for those “Calgon take me away” moments. Some choose nature for their space. A bench in the park, a meadow, a fountain, or perhaps a recreation of the Other Side. My space had always been a room, perhaps a tiny cottage up in the clouds, nothing fancy, some comfortable furniture, some candles. It loosely resembled the living room of the house where I lived for most of my childhood. The last time I was in this imaginary space, I was led there by a medium during a séance. For some reason an indoor space is easier for me to design and recreate in detail when I need it.

I continue to make my way through Michelle Belanger’s Psychic Dreamwalking (which is absolutely fascinating so far, by the way), and she guides the reader through creating a “dream haven”. This idea reminded me of my personal space for meditation, only in this case, Michelle suggests using it as a starting point to get to your dream space. It can be a personal haven meant only for you, or it could also be used as a meeting area for those invited into your dream space.

I had some quiet time during a study hall today and I decided to get the book out to read a few pages. With Michelle’s help, and using my imagination, within ten or fifteen minutes I’d moved out of my old space and creatively designed a dream haven so beautiful and perfect for me! I only wish I was an artist and could paint the picture for you. The fireplace is unbelievable and so it’s always warm and cozy. The best part? There’s no need for wallpaper since nearly every inch of the walls are decorated with books. It takes me back to another time! I can’t wait to practice visiting my dream haven!

Please share! Do you have a dream haven or something similar?

Angel Moments: Music as Meditation… Or is it?

I had planned to write a blog post on a completely different topic tonight. Actually, I’d planned on writing it last night, but a completely random video shared with me through social media completely affected me in such a way that the blog post and what I had to say before that moment just didn’t matter anymore. As of tonight, I’ve probably watched (listened to, really) the video at least 15 times. I’ve had these feelings several times before. It has been a while, but I’m recognizing it and the familiar feeling is coming back to me. My mind is so clear now… and so something else is clear to me as well… the fact that these feelings need to be my blog post. At first I thought “Well this is the music part of me… how will I play this off in a paranormal/spiritual blog?” Then in that clear and focused space in my head, I realized it did indeed fit. I promise you I’m not high. Okay follow me.

Me... about a decade ago, trying for one of those "angel moments".

Me… about a decade ago, trying for one of those “angel moments”.

Many of you know that outside of my many nerdly hobbies, I’m also a music teacher and choir director. Growing up, music played a massive part in creating who I am today. Some of my earliest memories include powerful musical experiences… some from church, some from home, and some from theatrical performances. I’ve actually written about a few of these in one of my earliest blog posts. I often wonder, for example, what my parents must have thought about those moments when I listened to the same track from certain orchestral film scores over and over… picturing a story in my head (not necessarily the one from the movie) and crying from the emotion of the music. Rewind. Listen to it again. Cry. Rewind. Listen again. My students know these as “angel moments”… and even though they don’t happen often, they know when they got me. They cheer and exclaim things like “Mr. Keller! We just had an angel moment!” Yes we did… and Thank God for those moments when they happen.

I’m sure you’ve had these angel moments… though perhaps it doesn’t involve music for everyone. Can anyone really explain what’s happening during these powerful experiences? I’m not sure I can. In fact, in the case of tonight and last night, it’s like my mind and brain checked out and I just felt and experienced. Then sometimes it’s like an obsession. For example, I’m fighting the need to stop typing to replay it again right now. I’d LOVE to know what the brain activity of an angel moment looks like. I’m sure there’s research out there.

So my question is: Is this a form of meditation? Is it meditation if I’m focusing so deeply on what I’m hearing and how it makes me feel? Am I in some sort of trance state? As I said in the first paragraph, after listening a few times and having those angel moments, my mind is super clear, giving me the ability to do things like freely write this blog post. (Writing doesn’t always come easy for me. When I’m inspired I have to run with it.)

I have many examples I could give of times when music affected me like this. Unfortunately, most of these experiences can’t be found on YouTube or iTunes… and it probably wouldn’t have the same meaning or bring up the same emotions for everybody. But you’ve got to listen to this amazing a cappella performance of this obviously talented and genius young man. It’s linked at the end of the post. The fact that people are able to do these things just blows my mind.

Before someone tells me I’m not meditating if I’m listening to and processing words, I have to explain something. It is very unusual in my profession as a choir director, and many people don’t understand this and disagree with my opinion on it, but I do not often “hear” lyrics or words in music. Words don’t even have much value in my ability to perform, enjoy, or hear the “story” in a piece of music. My story might just be different from yours. So yes, the hymn below obviously has a Christian message, but I promise you it’s the sounds and the intense harmonies that I hear. It’s the emotion and the drama. As someone who has fond and nostalgic memories of the music growing up in the church (and the music would be one of few positive experiences from those days), it’s also a very familiar melody to me. But seriously, the entire song might as well be sung as an “ooh” or on a “la” as far as I’m concerned. Now I know this is not typical, so in my field I have to constantly remind myself that most people, including my students, place a large value on the words and what the lyrics mean to them. It also means I suck at the lyrics to my favorite songs. Yeah… I’m one of those people.

One of my favorite quotes:

“Music is what feelings sound like.”

– Unknown

Listen to the hymn HERE

So what do you think? Are angel moments a form of meditation? Is it something else? Do you have any of your own moments to share? (I’m also curious… can you hear this without the words? And if so, do you get the same angel moments?)

Turbulence…

Ohhhh boy. This post is definitely less paranormal and more for my spiritual peeps out there. It has been a rough week. Anyone else concur with me? There seems to be some kind of funky brown aura wrapped around everything this week. I haven’t had energy, I’ve been lethargic in general, and there have been several tense or uncomfortable moments with coworkers. I haven’t liked the energy that keeps being tossed at me, but I also haven’t felt at all proud of the energy residue that I’ve been giving off lately either.

I don’t regularly follow astrology, and I almost never understand it, but I tend to listen when someone gives a warning about turbulence ahead due to the moon or the ominous “retrograde” (whatever that is). I’ll always remember the week that I heard an astrologist discuss how people should expect a lot of technology and computer glitches for a certain time period, probably because of something lunar. And what happened that week? Lot’s of techie drama in my world.

Anyway, back to today. I had a frustrating drive home, a drive that included a discussion with myself on such topics as, “What’s with this week?”, “What’s my purpose, anyway?”, “Do people throw up invisible shields to protect themselves from me on days like this?”, “Am I a good person?”, “Will people have good things to say about me when I’m gone?”, and “Should I go get ice cream?”. After I got home and received a cheerful and much-needed greeting from our four-legged son, I opened up my favorite social media app on my phone. One of the first things I saw was a statement from medium Kristy Robinett.

Today you might be feeling exhausted, tired, moody and some even sick/depleted. The mood is still swinging all over the place as the moon is in Taurus. If at all possible, get takeout, light a candle, watch television or read a book and call it an early night. – Kristy Robinett

I immediately commented, saying how that explained so much about my week! There were handfuls of comments from others that were basically saying the same thing. Maybe there really is something going on?

Or……

…maybe my chakras and aura need to go into the shop. Maybe I just need meditation (or medication?). I’ve been bad and haven’t done that in a long time either. Maybe this is all just some crazy intuition that I’m too dense to understand?

Anyone else experiencing this? What do you do to find your “normal” self again? Consider this an official request for assistance from all you gurus out there.

🙂

PEACE! (Please!)

A Very Ouija Thanksgiving…

From our first Ouija session…

So I’ve been hinting for a few months now that I’d be doing some research and some experiments with the Ouija board soon. After reading Rosemary Ellen Guiley’s Ouija Gone Wild and then learning about some pretty amazing Ouija sessions on the Consciousness Travels blog, I realized (and I’m just hoping I’m right) that Hollywood has turned the Ouija into something it is not. Well I’ve had the board for several weeks and have just been waiting for the right day… the right moment to start my next exciting spirit communication journey.

While going back home and visiting for Thanksgiving, I thought it might be a good time to try it out if the right moment came along. My family makes up most of my MOSS team. They’re used to investigating and participating in my experiments. But most importantly, they know how serious I am and how important this research is to me. So on Thanksgiving night at around midnight, after all of the festivities winded down, I set up for my first Ouija session.

You can see my setup in the picture above, but in addition I recorded the session with a digital audio recorder, I had a Mel Meter (measures ambient temperature and electromagnetic field) and a spirit box on hand. For those who may not know, a spirit box (sometimes called a “ghost box”) is simply a radio that has been modified to sweep through all of the radio stations on either the AM or FM band at a quick pace. Using a device like this for spirit communication purposes involves a somewhat controversial technique called “radio sweep”, which along with EVP fits under the umbrella of “ITC” (Instrumental Trans-Communication). The spirit box was only used toward the end of the session.

Three of us were involved in the session, but only two of us were at the board at a time while the third monitored the surroundings. We began with our own personal quiet time for meditation. I then stated our intentions and respectfully invited any non-negative spirit to join us for the purposes of learning about the other side and spirit communication in general. (I decided to avoid the popular  “from the light” statement because sometimes I feel this can kill an experiment right off the bat.) I was open and honest about this being our first Ouija session and invited anyone present to give advice or help us with our technique. We asked several times if anyone was present with us and then waited. We received no answers through the board, however, there were multiple instances where the light fixture overhead (set to be very dim) flickered. It is not exactly unusual for lights to flicker in my parents’ house, but not usually this many times in such a short period. Also, my mother has never noticed the flickering with this particular dining room overhead light fixture. Several of the flickers seemed to happen within seconds of each question, especially the “Is there anyone with us?” questions. We noted the flickering and moved on with other various questions and received no answers. That’s when we turned on the spirit box.

I’ve used my spirit box in a few paranormal investigations, and although I continue to be openly skeptical about how people use or interpret it, I feel there is a good chance I’ve had some legitimate spirit communication through the device in those situations. In my experiments at home I haven’t had the same experience. This may have been the case with our Thanksgiving Ouija session. After asking for anyone present to introduce themselves, we heard a pretty significant response that sounded like “Bubba”. Other than that moment, I don’t feel like we had any significant or paranormal responses through the spirit box.

Regarding the Mel Meter, no unusual EMF or temperature readings were noted.

Were we disappointed? Sure. I was completely prepared to type out the transcript for you in this post. But paranormal investigators get used to things being quiet and boring for most of the time. And sometimes, paranormal or not, the simple light flickers are pretty exciting. I still intend to analyze the audio eventually, and perhaps we captured an entity who preferred to communicate that way instead. If this is the case, you’ll hear about it.

I’d love to get feedback or suggestions from some of my readers who are experienced in this form of spirit communication. Just so you know, my future Ouija sessions are likely to be conducted by myself. I’m not sure when the next one will be, but I’ll keep everyone posted.

Thanks for stopping by.

Peace!
