Halloween Memories and Traditions

In this episode:

A Halloween Housewarming in 1911

A special return visit from Meth Hazel

Returning from episode 2 of the Big Séance Podcast, our next guest, Annie Wilder has a cool story from a Halloween night a few years ago. Now you have to remember that she lives in a haunted house, and when she mentions “the sisters” and “Leon”, those are spirits that are known to reside with her in the home.

Sara Wiseman joined us on October 2, 2014. I really enjoyed that conversation. She may have the sweetest and most calming voice ever, but you might want to briefly turn the lights on for this recent memory.

My friend Lee Allen Howard was with us for the September 11, 2014 episode. He is a medium and metaphysician, but he’s also an author, and he writes some horrifying things. And from his memories, it kind of makes you understand just where it all came from.

Next up is Karen A. Dahlman, who has been on the show twice, July 23, and October 16, of 2014. I absolutely love her story, and Karen was nice enough to send in a very special photo for all of us to enjoy.

Medium and psychic, Janice Carlson, joined us on August 27, 2014. She’s really fun to talk to, and she joins us again now to share this thought-provoking memory of a childhood Halloween. She also wanted to share an article she wrote about Halloween. **Janice’s drawing is coming soon!**

On September 18, 2014, Rob Gutro joined us to talk about Pets and the Afterlife. Here’s a memory from Rob.

If you’re a regular listener of the Big Séance Podcast, you know just how much respect I have for our final guest tonight, a man who has influenced me greatly! I was so very honored to have Jim Harold, of the Paranormal Podcast, join me back on Sept 25, 2014. I invited him to come back to share his thoughts on a favorite tradition on Halloween. If you’re a parent, you’ll relate to this one.

A special credit and “thank you” goes out to the incredibly talented Tim Prasil, for writing the really funny story for Meth Hazel’s appearance tonight. Thanks for playing along with us, and sharing your time and talent, Tim. You’ll actually be hearing from Tim, who is a writer, in a future episode of the podcast. You can learn more about him at timprasil.wordpress.com.

What?! The Big Séance Podcast? What are your thoughts?

For several months now I’ve been itching to try my hand at podcasting. I never miss a Voices Podcast by Randall Keller. I’ve been a big fan of Jim Harold’s podcasts for years, and I recently enrolled in his podcasting course. As it is my summer break, I’ve had a lot more time to focus on blogging and the paranerdal things that you know I love. I’ve been playing around with some ideas, recording some practice runs, and of course learning a lot from a master in the field, Jim Harold.

I’ve not determined that I will for sure kick this project off, but if I do, it’ll be before the summer is over. I’m having so much fun playing around and planning (which might accidentally be why I haven’t been seen around here for a few days), but I know it’s a big commitment… and it has to be spectacular, obviously.

What are your thoughts? The Big Séance Podcast would probably be produced a couple of times a month and supplement the blog that you’re reading now, and would feature guest co-hosts and/or guest interviews on most episodes.

Would you listen?

The Paranormal Podcast… To Ouija or not to Ouija?

Jim Harold and The Paranormal Podcast

I’ve mentioned Jim Harold and the Paranormal Podcast several times here at The Big Séance. It has played a big part in my paranormal “education” in the last several years. I love to listen to his podcasts driving to and from work. And… maybe I’m a nerd, but the opening theme music pumps me up and prepares me for the day. 🙂 I can proudly say I’ve listened to almost every episode! If you haven’t checked The Paranormal Podcast out, you totally should!

Jim Harold

Some of my favorite guests or authors on the program have been Annie Wilder, Maria DeSimone, Michelle Belanger, Lesley Pratt Bannatyne, and Rosemary Ellen Guiley, who was recently interviewed by Jim about her latest book. I’m ordering it as soon as I “publish” this post.

Ouija Gone Wild by Rosemary Ellen Guiley with Rick Fisher

From Guiley’s site:

For more than a century, simple divination devices called “talking boards” have captivated millions of people curious about contacting the spirit world. The most famous is the Ouija, whose trademarked name has become synonymous with all boards. Ouija messages have inspired writers, artists, and musicians, and have played a part in murder, suicide, possession, treasure hunting, marriage, divorce and bizarre behavior.Authors Rosemary Ellen Guiley and Rick Fisher provide a detailed examination of the Ouija. They debunk myths and discuss how horror films have influenced popular opinion.

Rosemary Ellen Guiley

I have to tell you (without going into a giant Ouija board post) that even though in the past I have resisted the urge to run out and get a Ouija board, I’ve always taken a strong NO OUIJA BOARD stance. After listening to her discuss the book, I wonder if this opinion is silly… especially having never used one. I like to consider myself a person who takes spirit communication and the study of it seriously. If this is the case, is it truly any different from experimenting with the spirit box or my clock radio… or even basic EVP research?

I’ve read quite a bit about the topic, but never an entire book devoted to it. While looking up sites to link in this post, I also realized that there are more books than I realized devoted solely on the topic of the Ouija. My “To Read” shelf may have just grown quite a bit.

Thoughts? Does anyone have any interesting Ouija board experiences?

The Shroud of Turin and the Chills During My Morning Commute…

Apparently the Shroud of Turin’s only documented history goes back to the 1300s, but it is thought to be centuries old and could quite possibly have the image of Jesus Christ, after crucifixion,  somehow imprinted on it. The shroud, a linen cloth, has been scientifically tested so many times that you can get lost in the research listed on www.shroud.com. Looking at the pictures, it is hard to imagine that any centuries old piece of fabric would not eventually disintegrate after that much research and handling over the years.

This morning on the way to work I was listening to the most recent episode of my favorite podcast, Jim Harold’s Paranormal Podcast, and he was interviewing the author and journalist, Nigel Kerner. The podcast was not entirely devoted to the topic of the shroud. Most of the interview discusses 2012 and our souls. Honestly, I probably only understand 10% of what this man says. BUT… if you cruise through to about 30:00, for about 8 minutes you’ll hear Nigel discuss some of the most recent research that just blows my mind. I had chills in my car. Before this morning I knew of the Shroud of Turin and had only a basic understanding of it. I think I had seen a program on the history channel or something years ago. I feel like I need to learn more about this. There’s even a Shroud of Turin blog!

The Vatican Insider summarizes the scientific papers that Nigel was describing below.

ENEA, the National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic
Development, has published a report on five years of experiments conducted in the ENEA center
of Frascati on the “shroud-like coloring of linen fabrics by far ultraviolet radiation.” “Simply put:
we tried to understand how the Shroud of Turin was imprinted by an image so special that it 2
constitutes its charm, and poses a great and very radical challenge, “to identify the physical and
chemical processes capable of generating a color similar to that of the image on the Shroud.”

Synchronicity by Surprise…

Many experts describe synchronicity by saying it’s what happens when you think about a certain person and a moment later they call you on the phone. Or, you’re driving to work and you have the sudden urge to slow down and put your hands on 10 and 2, then suddenly you see a cop appear ahead of you… or more seriously, maybe your sudden alertness is followed by an almost accident. Ring a bell? Maybe, just maybe, you were thinking about Synchronicity before you found this post? Face it… you reading my blog was meant to be. 🙂

Many people would argue that this is just coincidence or an accident. Dr. Kirby Surprise tells us this is not true in his book Synchronicity: The Art Coincidence, Choice, and Unlocking Your Mind.

How many times growing up did someone tell you that anything was possible if you put your mind to it? Did you roll your eyes? Can we really change outcomes or events with thought alone?

From the author’s website…

          • Learn to use your amazing ability to create synchronistic events.
          • Discover how your mind creates the reality you experience.
          • Unlock your brain’s vast resources of connectivity and creativity.
          • Change from living as a separate being to living as a part of the unified whole.

Today I listened to Dr. Surprise being interviewed on my favorite podcast, Jim Harold’s The Paranormal Podcast. I’ve heard and read about synchronicity from various mediums and experts, but from what I heard today it seems like Dr. Surprise views things a bit differently than the average spiritualist or medium… or at least the ones I follow. He mentions being inspired by the psychiatrist Carl Jung, who was the first to propose the concept of synchronicity.

I haven’t read the book but I think I’m going to add it to my queue. Hopefully my head won’t explode… Wait! Thoughts… positive thoughts…
