Author, licensed therapist, and Ouija Expert, Karen A. Dahlman, gives us the scoop on what role the Ouija board played in her first book,The Spirit of Creativity: Embodying Your Soul’s Passion. Also, how do you move beyond your own limiting beliefs? How do you channel chaos creatively? Plus, meditation, dreams, self-hypnosis, and how to know if you are sleepwalking through life.
Today’s guest is one of your favorites. Her first interview on the Big Séance Podcast was all the way back to episode 5. She was then co-host for episode 17, which was one of our special Halloween episodes, and she had contributions in episodes 19 and 24. Today she gets the stage, once again, all by herself, though it’s a different book this time. We’re going to be talking about her first book, The Spirit of Creativity: Embodying Your Soul’s Passion.
Karen A. Dahlman is an author, licensed therapist, business owner & consultant and a leading expert Ouija-ologist. She has been researching the use of the Ouija Board since 1973 by first-handedly using and perfecting her communication with varying consciousness and sentient beings via this tool with consistently amazing results!
Having a strong, spiritual connection to her spirit friends, as she has throughout her entire life, she teaches others within her books about the positive benefits of using the Ouija Board and other creative means as a pathway for expanding and deepening one’s world and expression within it in the most profound ways.
From working in the creative and humanistic field as a private practice art psychotherapist and then more recently as the CEO of a consulting and design firm in the high tech wireless industry, she found herself coming full circle within her career, from right brain to left brain to center brain. Karen strives to maintain a balance of her total brain within her heart.
She endeavors to help others deepen into their unique possibilities found only within their heart, so that they too may discover their own empowerment to affect personal growth, their spiritual evolution, and a passionate expression of their calling. In the spirit of the season, and in the style of Buzz, from the movie Home Alone, I’ll list 3 random things that have been on my mind the last couple of days. I really would like to know your thoughts on any of these points.
But first, just in case you’ve forgotten…
A.
I’ve been reading Reunions: Visionary Encounters with Departed Loved Ones by Dr. Raymond Moody. I’ve mentioned him and his work with facilitated apparitions and psychomanteums in a recent post with a review of his latest book. I’m absolutely fascinated by it all and am thinking about putting together a podcast episode on the topic.
Wouldn’t it be nice to just step into a room, one that is specifically designed for facilitated apparitions, and pretty much be guaranteed that you’d see and have some kind of communication with a passed loved one? Can you imagine how much one might be able to heal and move on from the pain and suffering of loss or other struggles in life? And perhaps just as important, it would simply be super cool!! Dr. Moody has had mind-blowing results from his experiments, with comforting results from the sitters, to say the least. According to his book mentioned above, Dr. Moody claims in nearly 50 percent of the subjects, “complex communications were reported.” Am I the only one that wants to empty out my walk-in closet to design a room like this for experiments?!

I’m trying not to read too much into this, but Friday afternoon at school, in the middle of a class I suddenly had uncomfortable feelings and looked over toward one of my classroom doors. We were playing Name That Tune and listening to several recordings. My mind for some reason went through an intruder/lockdown scenario. I stared at the double doors, wondered if the latches at the top and bottom were secured, and if they would really hold the door closed if someone attempted to pull them open forcefully. (These particular doors aren’t even the only entrance to worry about in my two connected classrooms. In the event of a lockdown, I have to be concerned about three doors/entrances–four if you count the door connecting the two classrooms.) As I stared through the skinny crack between the double doors, I wondered how much sound someone outside would hear, even with us in hiding. I shook myself out of it and continued with our game.
When I got in my car to head home after school, CNN was already tuned in on my SiriusXM radio. They were reporting the developing story of a shooting outside a Portland, Oregon high school. They’d mentioned the fact that it had happened about an hour and a half earlier, which would have been about the time I had my uncomfortable spell.
I’m not sure what conclusions, if any, to draw from this. Sadly, school shootings are becoming so common now days that we barely pay attention to them, so I suppose it truly could be coincidence… although I know what many of you will say about those. My heart goes out to the community and those involved.
…and D.
Last night I had a crazy disturbing dream. A murderous dream that could have come straight out of Dexter. A dream that I don’t even feel comfortable talking about! I woke up feeling so dark and icky. Why why WHY???
Actually, here’s a bonus thing. We’ll call it 5.
I’ve been considering changing the subtitle or tagline of BigSéance.com and The Big Séance Podcast. At the time of this writing, and since my very first post, it has been “My Paranormal World.” When I greet listeners to each episode of the podcast, I often say something like “welcome to The Big Séance table”, which almost sounds confusing, like that’s the name of the show. Therefore, sometimes I’ve dropped it to just “welcome to the séance table”, which isn’t much better. I’ve wanted to make the listener feel like they’ve walked into a séance room… or at least into whatever particular episode they’re listening to. This “come on in” feel has gotten me thinking about the concept of the parlor in the Victorian days and in the height of the spiritualism movement. A séance, or any afterlife communication, would most certainly have been conducted there. But I suppose my greeting on the podcast doesn’t have to have anything to do with the subtitle of BigSéance.com. Do you have any thoughts on how to creatively include “parlor” in the subtitle or tag line? Is it a dorky idea? I don’t even know if tag line is the right name for what I’m going for. Shoot me your thoughts!
Me jogging (not swimming) through the water in a long, single lane lap pool in my very nice yard (of a very nice home). I was jogging back and forth from the deep to the shallow end.
A group of neighborhood kids playing in the yard around me.
One girl continues to be mean, causing trouble and starting fights.
I scold the mean girl, tell her to “peace out” and “leave the property”.
The girl leaves (after making a dramatic exit).
The rest of the kids cheer and then continue playing again.
I continue jogging through the water, where I find an obnoxious, clunky, yet decorative, brown, plastic, helmet-looking “thinking cap” contraption in the water.
Stop laughing at me. No seriously.
It is so hard to explain or describe it, but I see it in my head perfectly.
Think –>
Complete with wires and parts that would have to be included for such a cap.
Except more like (excuse my lame sketch)…
…and in the shape of a plus or cross.
And all surfaces covered in a decorative brown plastic design, similar to this.
Stop making fun of me!
In my head, I knew that this hat/contraption had some kind of fame or significance to it. In the dream, a memory came back to me of some famous female (that I knew?) saying “This is the hat that I wore in blah blah…” as if it were a costume or prop from some old Hollywood film from the 40s or 50s.
I remember thinking I should use it for a project or something.
Okay ready GO! I’ll also except referrals for therapists and psychiatrists.
It’s an exciting day for me! My podcast, including a brand new episode with author Annie Wilder,is finally up on iTunes!Episodes are FREE! I’ve never been big on dream interpretation, and I don’t always recall my dreams, but my soul/subconscious/guides sure know how to fill the void with experiences that I long for in the waking world. This is true for when I’m on a diet and I dream about peanut butter cups, but it’s also true in a deeper sense, like my passion for spirit communication and the paranormal. Do you know what I mean?
Last night I believe I had the fourth or fifth dream that I can recall having to do with seeing the apparition of a ghost. I’m not including spirit visits in that statement, though two of those may be questionable, as I’m not sure if they were just a dream or some kind of message from spirit visitors. No, what I’m talking about now is clearly a dream, where I’m minding my own business, or going through my normal daily life (in a dream, anyway), and suddenly I’m allowed to experience the amazing high of seeing the apparition of a ghost before my eyes. There has never been anything like it in any other dream that I’ve had. It’s an amazing feeling!
In last night’s dream, I was apparently seeking out a spirit. This is usually not the case. I was with my father, and we were investigating what seemed to be the abandoned basement of some large building. As far as I know, this location is purely fictional, but imagine a place likeBelvoir Winery(the abandoned sections), or an equally creepy large and abandoned facility. I was leading the way with my father behind me, and I had absolutely no fear of my surroundings. I was on a mission, and that mission was to find evidence or proof of a specific male entity’s presence. Suddenly ahead of me, through the debris and the shadows, I saw what seemed to be a person way ahead of me, crossing in and out of the beam of my flashlight. I remember nonchalantly saying something like, “That’s weird. Someone is in here”, as if I wouldn’t have been frightened of a real person hiding or being with us in a dark and abandoned basement. We kept moving forward, and I expressed to my dad how disappointed I was going to be if I didn’t get some kind of evidence of this spirit that we were looking for. Suddenly, the full and solid figure of a human, down to the face and the clothing, was standing in front of me, again in the beam of my flashlight. You have to ignore the fact that in waking life my fight or flight would have kicked in by this point. Clearly, it would be frightening to find that a stranger is in the dark with you in an abandoned building. Remember–this is just a dream. So my brain was clearly not registering what I was seeing, as it appeared to be just a solid person… completely normal. Excuse me sir, we’re trying to find a ghost here. My dad said something like “Well what do you think you’re looking at? This is what you came for!” It was, indeed, the spirit of the person we came for. And as soon as I realized that, the amazing rush happened… and I woke up.
In real life I’ve never seen an apparition. At least I don’t think so. Do we always know? In a recent dream, one that I had about Miss Owen(who is now a celebrity to my students at school), I was given a sketch of an apparition–a sketch of a moment in time that I was present for. So for that one, I proved that even in a dream I can miss the opportunity to see an apparition with my own eyes!
It is only in recent generations that we began to think of apparitions as being translucent or cloudy visual representations of spirit, and I think Hollywood has helped with that. Iblogged about another dream inwhich I witnessed an amazing translucent apparition crossing the road. But this has been the first dream in which the apparition was solid and looked just like you or I would. It was mind-blowing.
I’m a paranormal blogger, experimenter, and now podcaster. I’m fascinated by spirit communication. My mind is nearly always immersed in thoughts of the paranormal. You would think that I’ve had tons of paranormal experiences. I have not. Oh I’ve sat in dark rooms for hours and waited. I’ve attempted to spark a conversation with unseen spirits in an abandoned farmhouse by myself… in the dark. I’ve watched a motionless planchette on a Ouija board. I’ve studied and tried channeling (it’s supposed to be so easy!) I’ve analyzed hundreds of hours of audio and video, shooting down possible EVP and strange phenomena that don’t convince me. And yes, I’ve gotten a few crazy EVPs. I’ve had a few psychic moments. I recently blogged about avery early fuzzy memorythat stands out and could possibly have ghostly significance (but I may never know). I’ve even been grabbed in my sleep by a hand that quickly disappeared. I’ve had fun, but I want to see an apparition! Where is mine?! Bring it!
Is this why I have these dreams? Is this God’s way of giving me some of what I need to keep me going while I wait? Sigh…
Me going down the steps of the abandoned farmhouse. (Thank GOD my dad tried it first!)
