Halloween Memories and Traditions
In this episode:
A Halloween Housewarming in 1911
A special return visit from Meth Hazel
Returning from episode 2 of the Big Séance Podcast, our next guest, Annie Wilder has a cool story from a Halloween night a few years ago. Now you have to remember that she lives in a haunted house, and when she mentions “the sisters” and “Leon”, those are spirits that are known to reside with her in the home.
Sara Wiseman joined us on October 2, 2014. I really enjoyed that conversation. She may have the sweetest and most calming voice ever, but you might want to briefly turn the lights on for this recent memory.
My friend Lee Allen Howard was with us for the September 11, 2014 episode. He is a medium and metaphysician, but he’s also an author, and he writes some horrifying things. And from his memories, it kind of makes you understand just where it all came from.
Next up is Karen A. Dahlman, who has been on the show twice, July 23, and October 16, of 2014. I absolutely love her story, and Karen was nice enough to send in a very special photo for all of us to enjoy.

Medium and psychic, Janice Carlson, joined us on August 27, 2014. She’s really fun to talk to, and she joins us again now to share this thought-provoking memory of a childhood Halloween. She also wanted to share an article she wrote about Halloween. **Janice’s drawing is coming soon!**
On September 18, 2014, Rob Gutro joined us to talk about Pets and the Afterlife. Here’s a memory from Rob.
If you’re a regular listener of the Big Séance Podcast, you know just how much respect I have for our final guest tonight, a man who has influenced me greatly! I was so very honored to have Jim Harold, of the Paranormal Podcast, join me back on Sept 25, 2014. I invited him to come back to share his thoughts on a favorite tradition on Halloween. If you’re a parent, you’ll relate to this one.
A special credit and “thank you” goes out to the incredibly talented Tim Prasil, for writing the really funny story for Meth Hazel’s appearance tonight. Thanks for playing along with us, and sharing your time and talent, Tim. You’ll actually be hearing from Tim, who is a writer, in a future episode of the podcast. You can learn more about him at timprasil.wordpress.com.
Don’t forget!! Are you a regular listener? Please e-mail (or call, or SpeakPipe) with where you’re listening from, and how you’re listening! I’d appreciate it! Patrick@BigSeance.com

Jim Harold and The Paranormal Podcast
I’ve mentioned Jim Harold and the Paranormal Podcast several times here at The Big Séance. It has played a big part in my paranormal “education” in the last several years. I love to listen to his podcasts driving to and from work. And… maybe I’m a nerd, but the opening theme music pumps me up and prepares me for the day. 🙂 I can proudly say I’ve listened to almost every episode! If you haven’t checked The Paranormal Podcast out, you totally should!

Jim Harold
Some of my favorite guests or authors on the program have been Annie Wilder, Maria DeSimone, Michelle Belanger, Lesley Pratt Bannatyne, and Rosemary Ellen Guiley, who was recently interviewed by Jim about her latest book. I’m ordering it as soon as I “publish” this post.
Ouija Gone Wild by Rosemary Ellen Guiley with Rick Fisher
From Guiley’s site:
For more than a century, simple divination devices called “talking boards” have captivated millions of people curious about contacting the spirit world. The most famous is the Ouija, whose trademarked name has become synonymous with all boards. Ouija messages have inspired writers, artists, and musicians, and have played a part in murder, suicide, possession, treasure hunting, marriage, divorce and bizarre behavior.Authors Rosemary Ellen Guiley and Rick Fisher provide a detailed examination of the Ouija. They debunk myths and discuss how horror films have influenced popular opinion.

Rosemary Ellen Guiley
I have to tell you (without going into a giant Ouija board post) that even though in the past I have resisted the urge to run out and get a Ouija board, I’ve always taken a strong NO OUIJA BOARD stance. After listening to her discuss the book, I wonder if this opinion is silly… especially having never used one. I like to consider myself a person who takes spirit communication and the study of it seriously. If this is the case, is it truly any different from experimenting with the spirit box or my clock radio… or even basic EVP research?
I’ve read quite a bit about the topic, but never an entire book devoted to it. While looking up sites to link in this post, I also realized that there are more books than I realized devoted solely on the topic of the Ouija. My “To Read” shelf may have just grown quite a bit.
Thoughts? Does anyone have any interesting Ouija board experiences?

In honor of our open house today, where NO ONE showed up, even after making the house look museum quality, lighting all the candles, and the dog and I vacating for two hours to erase any hints of his existence (so sad), I got to thinking about haunted real estate as a blog topic today. My home is definitely not haunted, but would it draw more interest around here if it were? Or… would people avoid it like the plague?
[BREAKING NEWS: An hour and a half later, while writing this post, we had to halt life and completely vacate again… moving dog things (and myself) down to the basement because someone wanted to show it while we were here.]

As a seller, should you disclose the details of haunted or “stigmatized” real estate?
I found a really cool blog by a real estate agent from Silicon Valley… http://hauntedrealestateblog.com/. Mary Pope-Handy, the writer of the blog, says that “A stigma can be caused by a murder or other crime, usually violent – it does not have to result in death for a stigma to be attached to the property. The presence or suspected presence of a ghost would cause a stigma, but so would the a murder, rape, or other highly negative event.”
I’m not able to find a master list of states that require you to disclose the haunted history of a home, however, Mary Pope-Handy has compiled information about the laws and disclosure for Hawaii, Illinois, Massachusettes, New Jersey, Oregon, Virginia, and Washington, It seems as though it is different for every state.
According to Susan Funaro in article from legalzoom.com, “Sellers should disclose grisly facts about the house, so they will not be “haunted” later. Even if not required by state law, in order to soothe prospective buyers and avoid lawsuits, sellers should be upfront about their home’s paranormal guests or ghoulish histories.”
Is there a market for haunted real estate?
And more importantly… would it add to home value? Apparently it depends on what you’ll use the property for. Bed & Breakfasts often attract guests because of their suspected ghosts. I’m willing to bet that there are quite a few B&Bs out there with manufactured ghosts for this reason. I’ve always wanted to have an old Victorian haunted home though, for a B&B or something similar… especially after reading House of Spirits and Whispers, by Annie Wilder.
There is definitely more information about NOT getting stuck with a haunted home… or even how to UNLOAD your haunted home.
Anyone have experience with buying or selling a haunted home? It’s an interesting new topic for me.

One of my favorite light-hearted non-fiction reads about ghosts is House of Spirits and Whispers: The True Story of a Haunted House by Annie Wilder. I heard this author being interviewed on Jim Harold’s Paranormal Podcast a few years ago. You can find that podcast here.
I really truly could not put this book down once I started it. Annie details how she came upon her old Victorian home in Hastings, Minnesota and the spirits she was unaware came with it. She is so detailed, she even includes FLOOR PLANS!
Retiring in an old beautiful Victorian home is something I have always kind of wanted to do. By the end of the book I was so jealous that I didn’t own her house… and I wanted to make a visit! 🙂
From the back of the book cover:
In 1994, Annie Wilder and her children moved into a 100-year-old house in a historic Mississippi River town. Beautiful but spooky, the house had been on the market for six months with
no offers. It felt like – and proved to be – a very haunted house.
Essentially the story of a remarkable old Victorian house that seems to be a threshold to the spirit world and the astral realm, “House of Spirits and Whispers” has a backstory of the Wilder family’s relationship with the ghost of the home’s previous owner, an old man named Leon.
Covering a decade’s worth of ghostly activity and supernatural events, from whispering radiators to visits and appearances from all manner of spirits and entities, this unusual story is the true account of Annie Wilder’s experiences living in a haunted house.
Author Annie Wilder’s segment on the Biography Channel’s “My Ghost Story” season two, episode three.
