The EVP Experiment

Inspired by Voices from Eternity, a book by the late EVP researcher and pioneer Sarah Estep, on March 13, 2012 I began conducting a two-week experiment of daily EVP sessions in my home. I was blessed with two weeks of spring break from my job as a teacher, and so this was the perfect time. It allowed me to focus for hours at a time on just being the nerd that I am.  Since I had also been enjoying my new hobby of blogging on paranormal topics, I would chronicle the whole experiment.
I wasn't a stranger to EVP and the paranormal before this journey. Outside of being a paranormal investigator, I had conducted EVP sessions in my home before, but never so formally and consistently. I never had much success. Because my home is only 3 1/2 years old and I have been the only owner, I knew my house was not haunted. That wasn't the point, anyway. I was hopeful that like Sarah and other serious EVP researchers, I would eventually record voices. Where would the voices come from? EVP doesn't have to be from earthbound spirits, although they certainly can be. They can also be from “the other side” or “the spirit world”. Since the days of Spiritualism and séances, people have heard from voices even claiming to be from other planets and universes.
In the last several years I had become more and more fascinated by the topic of spirit communication and EVP, reading every book I could get my hands on (and you can see most of these books on my recommended reading page). I was ready to communicate.

What did my EVP Sessions look like?

Most of the time I recorded in the afternoon between 2:30 and 3:30pm. I wanted to be as consistent as possible. There were a few days, especially toward the end, where I had to adjust my schedule out of necessity. In those occasions I ended up recording later in the evening. Most sessions were around 12 to 22 minutes long. I conducted almost every one of my sessions in my office, which is located on the second floor of my home.
EQUIPMENT, PROGRAMS, AND AUDIO USED IN MOST SESSIONS

  • Tascam DR-07 Digital Audio Recorder with Tascam TM-ST1 Stereo Microphone (used for every session)
  • Sony ICD PX-820 Digital Audio Recorder (I began additionally using this recorder starting with the second session)
  • Sony MDR-V600 Dynamic Stereo Headphones were used with the Tascam recorder during sessions (additionally used starting with the second session)
  • Medium sized wall mirror (added in Day 9)
  • Sefan Bion's EVPmaker Version 2.5
    • used for portions of most sessions as a background noise source
    • I used EVPmaker to record my voice reading a few paragraphs from a book. The program then chops the recording into very small segments and randomizes them, making actual intelligible words nearly impossible to hear when played back. In theory, spirits are able to use these sounds to aid them in producing their own messages. This is called opportunistic EVP (as opposed to the most common, transform EVP. It is also possible to record transform EVP over the top of the EVPmaker). Using EVPmaker to record opportunistic EVPs is also an example of Instrumental TransCommunication (or ITC).
    • Settings: Segments were from 80 to 120 ms, Z-Cross, for some sessions I used the “overlap” setting, speed control was set to 122%.
  • Pink, White, & Brown Noise (only Pink was used in most sessions)
    • used for portions of most sessions as a background noise source.
  • An opened Microsoft Word document
    • This was used in case any entities were to choose to communicate through the computer.
  • Musical selections from the following albums used for portions of most sessions as a background noise source.
    • Nature's Meditation, Copyright 2010 Hot Ideas
    • Massage: Music for Deep Relaxation, by Ron Allen, Copyright 2010
    • Return to the Heart, by David Lanz

BEFORE EACH SESSION
Before each session I always ground and center at the very least. Most of the time I meditated beforehand, and on a few occasions I recorded those meditations.
THE SESSION ITSELF
Each session was different, but for the most part followed the same basic format. I began each recording session in silence (no background noise sources, other than a nearby ceiling fan used on a few occasions as an experiment). There were a few additional sessions that I recorded on some days to take advantage of different activity in my surroundings, such as a thunderstorm, running shower, construction, etc.

  • After starting a recording, I allowed several seconds of silence for possible communication.
  • I asked for assistance from my guides and anyone present to bring the presence of any spirits willing to communicate
  • During most sessions I specifically requested the presence of Sarah Estep. For some of the sessions I also requested the presence of Cathy “Cat” (Martha Copeland's daughter), or anyone else from The Big Circle. For one or two sessions I also requested the presence of Erik (Channeling Erik website).
  • “Is there anyone present with me?”
  • “Can you tell me your name?”
  • After several minutes I would play small portions of one of the above musical selections while continuing my questions. I'd gradually move the volume up or down slightly.
  • After stopping the music I played pink noise (sometimes white and/or brown as well) in the background and continued with my questions, gradually moving the volume up or down slightly.
  • After stopping the pink noise I would start up EVPmaker, gradually moving the volume up or down slightly, and continuing with questions.
  • After stopping the EVPmaker I would ask for general suggestions or advice in making it easier to communicate or to make the experiment more successful.
  • At this point, for some sessions, I asked if there was any way they could make a noise or move an object in the room.
  • I asked for any last messages before the session ended.
  • Lastly, before ending each session I thanked anyone present for their energy, their presence, and their assistance. I also asked and encouraged them to return and invite others willing to speak to me in the coming days.
REVIEWING AUDIO

For audio review and editing I used Audacity 1.3.12-beta with the Sony headphones. Every attempt was made to to initially listen to each session from each device without amplifying first. Audio files from the Tascam tend to playback at a much softer volume (I assume this is because of using the Tascam stereo microphone), therefore I amplified most of those files before reviewing.

The Journey…

The experiment started out with lots of enthusiasm and I was very hopeful, but when day after day of recording no voices got me down, blog readers were there to encourage me. I also turned to Sarah Estep and her book for encouragement.

Finally, on Day Six, March 18th, I recorded three possible one-syllable, very soft vocal responses. Incidentally, Sarah captured her first EVP, “beautiful”, on her sixth day of recording. I had this fact in my mind the whole day. Two of my responses were captured in both recorders. They are not at all impressive. I cannot in confidence say that these are truly EVP, and if they are, they are most likely lower than Class C.

It was also on March 18th that I decided to experiment with recording with the shower running. It was several minutes after my official recording for that day. My partner had just gotten in the shower. I recorded for about a minute and a half and spoke quietly into the recorder because I did not want him to know that I was recording. When I mentioned it later in the evening he said he never heard me and didn’t know. After asking, “Is there anyone present with me? Can you speak?” I got what could be a true EVP saying what sounds like “you speaking?”  My partner (who is a 100% skeptic) did not remember speaking to me or saying anything from the shower and claims it is not his voice. I know it was not my own voice because I was wearing headsets and heard it while it was happening.

On Day Eight, March 20th, I recorded one of only two EVPs that I have captured while pink noise was playing in the background. It seems to be an entire phrase or two. Enhancing it only makes it sound like Charlie Brown’s teacher.

On Day Nine, March 21st, I asked “Does more volume help?” (I again had pink noise playing in the background). Seconds later came the response of “yes”.

On Day Ten, March 22nd, I was using EVPmaker while asking the question, “How many of you are present with me today?” I do not claim to have any expertise with EVPmaker; however, I seem to have recorded a very pronounced “two” that I also heard in my headsets while recording. With it being only one-syllable, I’m not confident using it as evidence, other than the fact it is an interesting sounding “response”. I’ve noticed that when listening to the EVPmaker, it is easy to hear many of the one-syllable numbers, even without asking a question.

It wasn’t until Day Thirteen, March 25th that I recorded anything of interest again, and it was probably the most interesting session out of the entire two-week experiment. Like the Fox sisters I’d read so much about, I ended up having an entire conversation through a series of pronounced knocks and taps. It was incredibly exciting and I posted almost the whole 22 minutes of transcript on the blog (My Visit from a rapper!) with several audio clips.  In addition to all the knocking, I captured a voice saying “no” after I asked “Is there something I can help you with?” This was with pink noise in the background. (I’ve had several visits from this rapper since.)

After all of the conversation the day before, I had high hopes for my last official recording session of the experiment. Unfortunately, it was uneventful.

What I learned…

I must be honest and say I struggled with putting this section of my report into words. Once again, blog readers, several of them who research EVP themselves, including author, Randall Keller (no relation), came to my rescue. It is clear that what I learned has been a lesson on persistence and patience. During the experiment and immediately after, I was honestly disappointed with the results, but I’ve continued to record at least 2 or 3 times a week, including an overnight sleep recording occasionally. I’ve apparently earned someone’s trust, because I’m excited to report that I haven’t been disappointed with my last several sessions. The voices have also gotten clearer. How do I know that it was the same rapper who had noisily returned on several occasions? I recently asked, and I got the answer “Yes it is.” I also captured an interesting voice who may have asked the question, “Is this really death?” I gained some new skills with some finely tuned senses that will truly help me out in my paranormal investigations. I also gained a new time-consuming addiction. Therefore, I have to learn how to use time wisely, since I can’t very well quit my day job just to research.

My journey has only just begun, and I just know there are zillions of voices (not a proven statistic) just waiting to be heard, and perhaps persistently and patiently learning how to communicate with us from their end as well. The experience of this journey and sharing it with the world has allowed me to learn from some great mentors and some new friends.

Some of the blog posts from my two-week journey…

Below you'll find details and evidence from the whole experience. Most of these details are taken from the blog posts from the same time period. All documented times for audio are represented in minutes and seconds. For example, one minute and 30 seconds = 1:30. Also, in places where I have added information to a portion of a previous blog post, that information is included [in brackets and in blue].

From my March 13, 2012 blog post – First of Many EVP Sessions in the Next Two Weeks…

Sarah Estep in her office conducting an EVP session

At the risk of having a Geraldo Rivera/Al Capone moment, below are the details of my EVP Sesssion for 3/13/12 that began at approximately 2:30pm.

For this session I used a Tascam DR-07 digital audio recorder, along with a Tascam TM-ST1 stereo microphone (after today I plan on additionally using a Sony PX-820 digital audio recorder at the same time) in conjunction with a pair of headsets to hopefully allow for 2-way real-time communication. For portions of this session, using my computer, I played white noise, pink noise, and brown noise as additional background noise. For another portion of the session I used Stefan Bion’s EVP Maker (which I use to create background noise using my voice… I recorded myself reading a couple of paragraphs out of a book and then the program jumbles up that recording and plays it back so that nothing is recognizable) from 80ms to 120ms with Z-Cross and with the speed control set to 122%. For the last portion of the session I played the recording “Heartsounds” by David Lanz.
Before starting the session I meditated briefly and asked for assistance from spirit guides and explained my intentions.
After starting the recording I always allow time for communication before I speak. I then explained that I would be recording daily for two weeks with the intention of learning about EVP/Spirit Communication and the Spirit World/Afterlife/The Other Side. I would share my findings with others. No background sounds added yet.
I asked “Is there anyone from the spirit world present with me today?” And then a minute later… “Today I’d like to request the assistance of any spirit guides, Merlin, and loved ones who have passed, and I’d like to make a special request that someone please help bring in Sarah Estep for today’s EVP session.” A few seconds later… “Is Sarah Estep available?” Moments later I again asked if there was anyone present. I also asked if anyone was able to reach Sarah Estep. I mentioned that there were other EVP pioneers and experts that I’d love to communicate with as well if she wasn’t available. I mentioned I’d been reading Sarah’s book Voices of Eternity and that it inspired me to conduct this series of EVP sessions.
At 5:42 into the recording I mentioned that I would begin using the different background noises to possibly help with communication. I urged any entities present to communicate and let me know what works, what doesn’t, and what I could do to make it more successful. I then started the white noise audio. For each different background noise I gradually tried different volume levels.
At 8:35 into the recording I started the pink noise audio. A minute later I asked “Are there any messages you’d like to pass on today to others here on Earth?” At 10:15 into the recording… “In Sarah Estep’s book she mentioned that she learned that having a mirror near the recording device was helpful in reaching communication. Can you tell me if that’s true? Will a mirror help?” A few moments later.. “Where do I need a mirror if this is the case?”
At 11:40 into the recording I started the brown noise audio and urged any entities present to please continue trying to communicate. A moment later… “Can you tell me what volume works best?” A minute later… “Can you tell me if there is a time of day that is more convenient to record EVP or spirit communication?” I explained that I knew there was supposedly no concept of time on the other side, but I was interested in finding out if there was an earthly time that was better for recording EVP.
At 14:33 I started the EVP Maker and again asked if there was anyone present with me. At 16:00 into the recording I asked if the pitch or the speed of the file being played made a difference.
At 17:15 into the recording I started the David Lanz recording and again invited anyone present to please communicate. Two minutes later I asked “What can you tell me about this music? Do you enjoy this music?”
At 20 minutes into the recording I stopped the music and announced that I would be ending the session and asked if there were any last messages that needed to be passed on. A few moments later I decided to ask if it was possible for anyone present to make a knock, noise, or a thud in the room to let me know they were present. I also suggested moving an object in the room if that was possible.
A minute later I asked anyone present to let me know of anything I could do to make these sessions more successful.
Lastly, at 22:20 I asked anyone present to invite others from the light in the coming days and weeks to help. I thanked them for their presence, their energy, and their help before signing off.

After listening to this session twice I did not hear any obvious EVPs. I’m hoping that the focused and consistent recording in the next few weeks will change that. In the event I do hear EVPs I will be using the below classification system used by Sarah Estep, ATransC, and believed to be developed by Konstantin Raudive. This summary is from ATransC.org.  [I have not yet classified any of my EVP samples]

Class “A” voices can be heard and identified by anyone with normal hearing and knowledge of the language spoken; no special training of the ear is needed to detect them.

There are several hundred microphone-voices amongst my recordings that fall into this group. It is easy to make tape copies of “A” voices, and they can be repeated as often as desired. Thus, I have analysed roughly 25,000 voices according to speech content, language and rhythm. By this method of repetition, the acoustic reality of the voices can be established beyond doubt, and hallucinations of the ear are excluded.

Class “B” voices speak more rapidly and more softly, but are still quite plainly audible to a trained and attentive ear. The ability to differentiate increases with practice, but this is a slow and wearisome process. For this reason it is difficult to use non-regular participants for experimental purposes with class “B” voices.

Class “C” consists of the most interesting voices; voices that give us a great deal of information and much paranormal data. Unfortunately, these can be heard only in fragments, even by a trained ear, but with improved technical aids, it may eventually become possible to hear and demonstrate these voices, which lie beyond our range of hearing, without trouble. This grading and my comments are but a rough guide in the present stage of our approach to the psycho-acoustic aspect of the investigation.

From my March 14, 2012 blog post – Day Two of EVP Sessions…

Today’s EVP session was uneventful. I recorded for about 20 minutes. The transcript was very similar to day 1, with some differences in questions. The same background noises were tried and in the same order. Changes to day 2 included using an additional digital audio recorder (Sony PX-820 using the internal microphone) and running the above ceiling fan on medium for extra background noise (very soft). Because of the ceiling fan I had to use the wind shield with the Tascam Stereo Microphone used with the Tascam DR-07 digital audio recorder. I only flagged one segment from the PX-820 recording where I hear a low murmuring that stands out and seems to fade out and in for about 10 seconds, but is really soft. This was about 9 minutes into recording and was right after me asking “Was anyone able to assist in bringing in Sarah Estep?” After listening to the rest of the recording I realized that the light murmuring is most likely coming from the ceiling fan above. Even if it is not, it probably wouldn’t even be graded a Class C EVP. I plan on uploading the audio into Audacity for further review.
I am still hopeful that I will eventually record EVPs and possibly real-time spirit communication before the end of the two weeks. Yesterday I contacted Tom and Lisa Butler, directors of Association TransCommunication, and let them know of my two-week journey of daily EVP sessions. They responded with some helpful advice and encouragement.
For those who are curious, here are samples from my recordings where you can hear the white, pink, and brown noises, as well as the EVP Maker manipulating my voice for background noise.

From my March 16, 2012 blog post – Some Encouragement From Sarah Estep…

So I have come upon the fourth day of my two-week daily EVP experiment inspired by Sarah Estep’s Voices of Eternity. I have not yet reviewed today’s audio, but I’ve found myself getting a little disappointed that I have had no clear communication with the spirit world, or any other realm for that matter. I’ve always known that it takes perseverance and consistency, and I’ve done EVP sessions in my home before, but after four days of serious thought, planning, and determination, I can’t help wondering what I’m doing wrong. I’ve also had to stay strong because when you have a passion for this kind of topic and study, you can sometimes be perceived as a weirdo, even in your own home. Yesterday I got a little self-conscious when I wasn’t the only one home and it was time to record. I’m going to have to work on that. It’s not always easy when others in your life think a passion of yours is silly. Not everyone will understand why some of us put so much effort and energy into this type of thing, and I suppose not everyone was meant to believe or understand.

I finished Voices of Eternity today, and thankfully I found some reassuring inspiration from Sarah in the last few chapters. Remember, I have just completed my fourth consecutive day of recording.

Since many experimenters work for weeks before picking up their first word, I was fortunate to record “beauty” on the sixth day. Even with this, it was far from easy. I would go for days and not hear a thing and then, when I was feeling most discouraged, someone would come through and say, “Don’t give up.” I think this is one of the secrets of voice recordings. If you don’t give up, if you persevere, you will receive answers. The voices will speak to those who search, but it is up to each person to initiate that search.

Sarah Estep started her journey of EVP in 1976 with the intention of recording for just one week at first. Her loved ones thought she was crazy, too. If she didn’t hear any voices by the seventh day she would not continue. As she mentioned above, hearing the word “beauty” on the sixth day was enough to keep her pushing forward and was the beginning of many years of successful EVP research. She would later become known as one of the modern pioneers of EVP. She died in 2008. You can visit the Association TransCommunication website for more information on Sarah.
The following passage from the book really felt good to read.

I am willing to accept whatever conditions our communicants set for I know that eventually we will be able to find our way firmly, without hesitation or faltering, to the other side. “Crossing the bridge” is available, not only to our friends in other realms, but to those of us who wish to make the journey. That they want this to be a mutual crossing there can no longer be any doubt of. If they hadn’t meant for our worlds to meet, they would not have begun to speak thirty years ago.
Recently I asked Styhe why he and his friends sought to contact us on the earth plane. His female associate first answered, “Help them.” Two counters later Styhe agreed, clearly giving the same message, “Help them.” In the following recording he replied, “It is,” when I asked whether it was accurate to think they wanted to help us so we would know what to expect when we crossed over to the spirit world.
Many months ago, when I was working on the third chapter, “The Voices on Death and Dying,” a clear voice said, “Your soul is not defeated.” They knew I was writing about death, and they took this additional way to reassure me, to reassure everyone, that life does not end at the grave. Life is eternal.

In tomorrow’s post I’ll share more interesting details from the book that I found interesting. And who knows? Maybe I’ll be able to also report on some voices from the other side?
If you’d like to hear some of Sarah Estep’s EVPs you can visit the World ITC website. Scroll down to the bottom. I also discovered that thanks to the Association TransCommunication, Voices of Eternity is available for free in its entirety online via a PDF download.

From my March 17, 2012 blog post – EVP, Mirrors, & Central Transmitting Agencies…

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! No wise post about the Irish and the paranormal here. I don’t know enough about the topic.
What I do know is yesterday I promised that in today’s post I would share some more interesting details of Sarah Estep’s book Voices of Eternity. For yesterday’s post, visit Some Encouragement from Sarah Estep.

Central Transmitting Agencies…

As mentioned before, Friedrich Jürgenson, as well as Konstantin Raudive, have said there is a central transmitting agency in the next dimension that is responsible for many of the loudest and clearest voice recordings. As indicated, my questions about this have received answers in the affirmative. While it appears that many who speak to me come to my office, others seem to communicate from the agency itself.
In the spring, when I asked if some spirit communicators go to the transmitting agency to speak, a loud emphatic voice avowed, ”I do.”
In the next recording I asked why they went to the agency for recordings. The two different voices replied–the first one with “They say,” to be finished by another voice with the surprising information, “It brings us luck.”
A month later I again inquired if spirits went to the central transmitting agency to listen and take part in recordings. I was told “Yes, this one.”
The following day I wanted to know if there was more than one agency. A voice replied, ”There’s lots of them.”
This answer received support two months later when I asked Styhe about the existence of more than one transmitting agency in the spirit world. He replied, “There is.”
It had occurred to me, early in my tapings, that the experimenter might serve as a sort of antenna in voice recordings. When I inquired if this was a correct assumption on my part, the answer, “This is so,” was returned twice in a clear voice.
Two weeks later I further explored this question. I asked if the experimenter functioned like a radio or TV antenna, or a receiving station.
The reply “Right!” was heard over the radio.

Before reading this I had never considered that there might be a heavenly location that spirits could visit to aid them in communicating with us on Earth. It reminds me so much of computer labs in the 1990s (college for me) and getting so excited about having e-mail for the first time but not really understanding how to use it yet. There was always a student assistant there to help you. And not everyone had e-mail back then so it was really exciting to find someone who was willing to e-mail you back and forth in between classes. Chat rooms were also extremely popular, and before I got my own computer I would have to go to a computer lab on campus to join a chat room.  It makes me chuckle to imagine a version of these labs on the other side. I’m sure if they exist they’re much different. :-)

Get a mirror!

A number of years ago I began taping a number of messages telling me I should get a mirror to use with my work. I ignored the messages, for they seemed ridiculous, and certainly never mentioned them to anyone. The voices became insistent about the matter, saying, “Get a mirror!” “I told you to get a mirror.” “Talk into a mirror,” and so on. Finally, more to quiet them than anything else, I bought a cheap mirror and placed it on top of my tape deck. The first time I used it a number of messages came through indicating how pleased they were to have it. A Class A voice said, “If you use this mode, we can help you.”

During that time period, Sarah received communication from several other EVP recorders saying they were getting messages about “mirrors”. She says…

These messages are reminiscent of the cross-correspondence cases famous in mediumistic literature. Four of us were taping messages concerning mirrors at about the same time with none of us realizing that anyone else was receiving similar messages.

I’ve heard of the many mythical stories about ghosts and mirrors, but to my knowledge I’ve never heard or read about the significance of having a mirror placed by the recording device for spirit communication. Sarah’s book was written in 1988. Has the use of mirrors in EVP recording been researched since? Does anyone know anything about this? I think I’ll have to find out more on the Association TransCommunication website.

Sarah Estep’s book, Voices of Eternity can be downloaded free in its entirety online thanks to the Association TransCommunication.

From my March 18, 2012 blog post – Day 6 and EVPs on the D-List…

Just an update…

Today is Day Six of my EVP experiment. Sarah Estep recorded her first clear voice on the sixth day. I have yet to review today’s recordings but I can tell you a little about what I heard reviewing Day Five’s recordings.
It is probably the standard for researchers to NOT display a “Class C” EVP or lower. What I hear would not even be classified as “C” and wouldn’t hold up in the court of EVP for sure, therefore you will not find them posted here… at least not yet. They may not be voices at all. But at least I feel like I’m making progress. If it is true that those on the other side need time to learn and adjust to communicating just as we do, then I feel good about this progress.
The two segments of my 3-17-12 EVP session that have possible light voices in the background are about one minute apart from each other and were recorded on the same digital audio recorder (I’ve been using two), the Sony PX-820. With this recorder I used the internal microphone. It is the same recorder that picked up Missouri Spirit Seekers’ best EVP catch at Friedens United Church of Christ in St. Charles, MO (those audio files are listed as EVP: Voice A, B, C, and D). The first of yesterday’s possible voice(s) is moments after the question “Can you tell me your name or anything about you?” Then shortly after asking for assistance in bringing Sarah Estep through, I asked “Is Sarah Estep available?” More possible voices followed.

My Setup for EVP Recording Sessions

From my March 19, 2012 blog post – You Speaking?: One Week Into My Tw0-Week EVP Journey…

It was several minutes after my official 3-18-12 recording. Joe had just gotten in the shower. I decided to record just a few minutes of his shower with my Tascam DR-07 digital audio recorder and Tascam TM-ST1 stereo microphone. If there were any remaining spirits or entities chilling out with me, maybe they could help me determine if the sound of the water running (or the water itself) helped them communicate? I recorded for about a minute and a half and spoke quietly into the recorder because I did not want Joe to know that I was recording. When I mentioned it later in the evening he said he never heard me and didn’t know. After asking “Is there anyone present with me? Can you speak?” there is what I believe could be a true EVP saying something like “you speaking?” You can hear the water running as well as the podcast playing from Joe’s iPhone. Joe (who is a 100% skeptic) did not remember speaking to me or saying anything from the shower and claims it is not his voice. I know it was not my own voice because I was wearing headsets and heard it while it was happening. After hearing it I wondered if it was Joe saying “Are you speaking?” It apparently was not. If anyone has an opinion on what you hear, feel free to share.

“You speaking?”

Obviously, recording EVP with a podcast in the background is not recommended. We immediately wondered if I was just picking up a voice from the podcast. Joe mentioned there are several people on that podcast and they very often talk over each other. I downloaded the episode of The Vergecastthat Joe was listening to and tracked down the exact moment to make sure there was no one talking over the main person speaking. No one is talking over him… and for sure no one says anything that could possibly sound like this EVP. Because I’m not sure how legal it would be, I won’t post the segment of the Vergecast that is captured in this EVP. However, it is a free download on iTunes if you’re interested. Look for episode 22 from 3-16-12. You’ll want to cruise through and listen from about 29:04-29:12.
After the excitement of hearing what could be my first clear EVP from this experiment (I’m not sure yet what it would be classified as), I was very excited to review the audio from the main session that I actually recorded just before. The results were not as spectacular, but about three minutes into recording I did get a very soft one-syllable response after the question “Is there anyone present with me today?”. I apparently thought I heard something while recording because I then say “Did I just hear an answer? Can you please reply again? Is there anyone present with me today?” A second or two later this time you again can hear a very soft one-syllable response. This was all before adding any background noise.
I’ve been using two recorders for my main sessions, so I went to the same two spots from the other recorder, the Sony PX-820. This time the first response sounds more like a “bonk” or something being struck to me. Weird. This will happen occasionally when comparing EVPs from investigations. One recorder will record what sounds like a voice while another recorder picks up something very different. While listening to the portion of the recording where the Tascam picked up the second one-syllable response, the skeptic side of me wonders if what I heard was the bark of a dog… possibly coming from outside. Who knows.
Lastly, about a minute after the responses from above, I said “Thank you for trying if you’re here.” Again, some kind of soft one-syllable response was recorded from the Sony PX-820, followed by some other very soft noises.  Cleaning it up in Audacity didn’t make it any more audible. Nothing from this moment was picked up by the Tascam DR-07.
The recordings from above were from yesterday. Today’s recordings marks my seventh day, the halfway point in this journey. I have yet to review them, but considering the above progress I am very hopeful!

Peace!

From my March 20, 2012 blog post – EVP Experiment: Day 8

The Experience…

As someone who has spent a lot of time working with EVP and hours and hours of audio from investigations in the past, I know how time-consuming it can be. You wouldn’t think a daily 15 minute EVP session would really tie you down for long periods of time. Because I’ve been recording each session with two recorders, and because it takes at least twice as long to review a recording as it took to record it, and because you then have to dig in and really analyze anything you’ve flagged along the way, this project has taken a couple of hours out of each day. This is especially true recently because even though they’ve been very soft, I’ve begun to hear voices. Because they’re not incredibly clear yet, they can more easily be confused with other natural sounds from the environment.
I feel like I’ve learned so much from this experiment… and not just about EVP, surprisingly. I’ve had so much fun and I really feel like I need to extend it and keep going after the two weeks are over. Since the voices are only beginning to come through it seems really silly and almost irresponsible to stop now. One problem… on Monday my spring break is over and life continues. Can I devote the time without going crazy and still stay in the focused, positive frame of mind that I’m finding EVP needs? My last session for this experiment as it is now will be on Monday evening, which is a school day for me… and no doubt it will be a long day. I guess that will be a good time to decide if I can keep going for a while. Would recording once or twice a week be effective? I’ll have to ponder the subject and keep you posted.

Here’s an Update…

Yesterday’s two EVP sessions (I did an extra one just for the heck of it) were uneventful. I did not hear anything impressive enough to document. However, in today’s session (day eight) I have flagged some interesting audio. I would not feel comfortable taking a stab at what this voice is saying, if it is a voice at all. Feel free to submit your opinion.
The audio below comes from the Tascam DR-07, using the Tascam TM-ST1 stereo microphone. Exactly nine minutes into the recording you can hear a possible voice speaking  (through the pink noise I was playing in the background) what seems to be several words or a phrase. I apparently heard it through my headsets because I turned up the volume of the pink noise and asked “Is someone here?” The last thing I asked before this possible EVP was “Cathy, or anyone from The Big Circle, are you here with me?” and then “Are you available?” followed by “I’m really enjoying your mom’s book about you” (I plan on posting on the topic of The Big Circle sometime soon. It’s a wonderful group and an amazing story…I’m waiting to finish a book first). Twenty-four seconds later the possible EVP was recorded. Nothing from this moment was picked up in the Sony PX-820.

You can’t hear much in this file, but I like to always let you hear the unedited file. The Tascam tends to be softer and I have to amplify those recordings a lot.

This file has been cleaned up a lot. I with I could make it more clear.

From my March 21, 2012 blog post – EVP Experiment: Day 9

Does More Volume Help?

Two not-s0-exciting days in a row, really… however, I may have finally gotten an answer that may help me make these recording sessions more successful. Apparently when I use background noise (specifically pink noise in this situation), turning the volume up makes it easier for this individual spirit to communicate.
Tonight’s EVP was picked up on the Sony PX-820 digital audio recorder a little after eleven minutes into the session. I had just turned up the volume of the pink noise and asked “Does more volume help?” I hear what sounds like a soft male voice saying “Yes.” I’ve cleaned it up as much as I can. This EVP was not audible in the Tascam DR-07 recorder.

Mirror, Mirror on the… floor…

The addition to my EVP sessions. Supposedly the frame to this mirror dates back to the 1800s.

Among many questions and topics I bring up in my sessions, I’ve tried to also make conversation about mirrors and if they really do help some spirits communicate. Including my session from today, I haven’t received any specific answers yet.

From my March 22, 2012 blog post – The Big Circle…

If you are a facebook friend of mine you’ve probably heard me mention The Big Circle before. If you are a parent who has lost a child, or anyone who has lost a loved one, you absolutely should watch both of the videos below. I’ve watched them many times in the last few years. This group is a part of the Association TransCommunication (ATransC, formerly AA-EVP), in which I am a member of and have mentioned quite a bit on here.
If you’ve been following my EVP experiment in the last few weeks, you’ll remember that I’ve been asking assistance from my guides to help bring in the presence of Sarah Estep (who founded the AA-EVP/ATransC), and anyone from The Big Circle. As you’ll see in the videos, Martha Copeland started the group after her teenage daughter Cathy died in a car accident. From the other side, Cathy began communicating with loved ones via the computer and EVP. There is a book by Martha about this amazing story of Cathy and The Big Circle called I’m Still Here. It’s a great book.
The last paragraph in I’m Still Here really moved me.

After completing this last page of the book, I envisioned a white light of love and protection surrounding me. Turning on my recorder, I posed this question: “Cathy, how do you and The Big Circle feel about the book?” Playing back the recording, I could hear Cathy’s voice saying, “Thank you, Mom,” and a male voice followed her voice with a clear “thank you.”

How can anyone NOT be moved by this stuff?
Please visit the original post if you'd like to watch 2 amazing Big Circle videos.
From the site…

The Big Circle consists of our loved ones in the etheric along with their loved ones in the physical. The realization that this group existed in the etheric, and was trying to connect to their loved ones here in the physical world, prompted members of the Association to form a special group called “Big Circle – Bridge to the Afterlife,” which is now referred to simply as the “Big Circle.” This group is made up of bereaved parents, spouses, siblings, and friends, whose mission is to build a channel between the physical and etheric aspects of reality–a Bridge to the Afterlife. We do this by joining our energies together on alternate Thursdays at 8:00 PM. We try to keep reminders of upcoming recording dates posted on the ATransC Idea Exchange in the Big Circle forum. But you can figure out the next date by extrapolating from the ones listed here. We effectively conduct a worldwide group recording session. Some participants join together in groups, or individually from their homes, making a joint effort to record for about five minutes.

From my March 23, 2012 blog post – EVPmaker and Spirit Box…

Yesterday was the 10th  day of my EVP experiment. Although I did not find anything I would consider to be a true EVP, I did hear some interesting “responses” in the segment where I used the EVPMaker. I decided I would post this segment along with another example, because its use in EVP and paranormal research is somewhat controversial. I tend to be very careful when claiming things are truly communication from spirits. On this blog and on the Missouri Spirit Seekers website you’ll often see me list audio examples as a “possible EVP”, or like I mentioned above… “interesting responses”. Since absolutely nothing about the paranormal or EVP can be 100% proven (that sucks, I know), I have to be pretty confident before I’ll claim something is a true EVP. With that being said, as a very spiritual person I don’t need science to know in my own heart that life doesn’t end at death, or that sometimes spirits hang around or communicate with us (whether earthbound or from the other side). I’m just not willing to claim that a sneeze from another investigator is an EVP, or that the asthmatic breathing of the person holding the recorder is a ghost spookily telling you to “Get out!” In the rush of wanting to find cool evidence I think this happens too often in paranormal research these days. I’ve spent probably hours in the last week alone analyzing segments of recordings which sound like they could be impressive EVPs only to throw them out because I realized (sadly) the noise came from something in the natural environment around me.

Transform EVP…

Most likely, the EVP that you may be familiar with, have heard through  my blog or on TV, are examples of Transform EVP. An example of this would be if you were to take a basic tape or digital recorder and were fortunate enough to capture a spirit voice in the natural environment around you.  When I use a sound source, such as white, pink, or brown noise in the background, this is also an example of transform EVP, although it’s sometimes harder to review. More and more we are finding that spirits seem to be able to use this energy and sound source to create or form their own words and phrases. You may remember that just a few days ago I got what may have been a response of“yes” when I asked if turning up the volume on the pink noise made it easier to communicate. Many EVP researchers have even found quite a bit of success using just a fan (something with a motor) or running water nearby. I’ve used both for this current experiment.

More Controversial types of EVP…

EVPMaker is a computer program that many EVP researchers have used in the last few decades. It’s an example of what we call Opportunistic EVP. According to the site where the software can be downloaded, “EVPmaker is an experimental software for the generation of acoustic ‘raw material’ for recordings of paranormal voices on tape, also known as ‘Electronic Voice Phenomena’ (EVP). For this purpose, the program divides any recording of speech into short segments and then plays them back continuously in randomly order. The resulting ‘gibberish’ still sounds like speech, but can’t be understood anymore, and is therefore suited as background noise for EVP recordings.”
For my experiment I recorded my own voice reading a couple paragraphs out of a book. You can tell EVPMaker how short you want the segments to be chopped into.  The segments are always played back randomly. In addition, I have it set to overlap segments and have the speed set to 122%.
Why is it so controversial? Since what you’re hearing is already portions of a human voice, it is harder to tell if it is a spirit manipulating the data and random sounds to create their own voices, or if the message you’re hearing is a pattern of sounds that coincidentally forms a message. Sometimes our brains hear what they want to hear. This would be an example of auditory pareidolia(commonly referred to as matrixing).
Here’s my example. I won’t tell you what I hear right now. You kind of have to develop an ear when working with opportunistic EVP. After each question I ask in the example I hear several possible responses. I hear maybe 4 or 5 responses in the whole example. Are they truly answers from a spirit or spirits present for my session, or is this just coincidental sounds that my brain just wants to hear? I look forward to your comments and feedback!

Audio Example: (click the link below)

EVP Maker with “How many of you are present with me today?”

Audacity sound wave for “How many of you are present with me today?”

Another example of opportunistic EVP that is fast growing in popularity is the use of Radio Sweep or Spirit Box (sometimes “ghost box” or “Frank’s box”). Recently I’ve gotten to know Darlene, founder of Joplin Paranormal Research Society (JPRS). They have had lots of success with using the spirit box. Please visit the original post for a video of just a few of their many examples.

From my March 25, 2012 blog post – EVP Experiment: Down but Not Giving Up!

EVP Experiment Update: Today is Day 13…

It has definitely been quiet in the last several days. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t bummed or disappointed. For the most part I have been sticking to the same method and processes from Day 1… however, I’ve changed or tweaked a few things as I’ve gone along to attempt to help entities more successfully communicate. I’ve also added a few unplanned, less formal recording sessions in addition to the official daily recording.
Yes, I’ve worked with and recorded EVPs before… but not a lot, and never so consistently and formally. And… I have picked up a few from this experiment. But why so quiet lately? What am I doing wrong? I’ve spoken to a fellow blogger about “belief and intent” and how it could possibly be affecting my experiment. Synchronicity may have also led me to reading about the same thing recently in Randall Keller’s book, Vocies From Forever. I want you to know that I absolutely believe, without a doubt, that spirits can and do communicate. You also need to know that I have never been so inspired and focused with a clear intent… even when reviewing the sessions. There have been a few days where I struggled to get a session in when life happened. I also know that sometimes I struggle meditating (something I’ve tried to do before every session), and there have been a few days where I haven’t completely felt grounded with a positive and high spiritual energy. Again… life happens. But right now I feel my problem might be due to more of a lack of confidence, and maybe feeling a little insulted after a few quiet days. Is there a problem with my invisible bat signal that other researchers who record tons of EVP project so well? Do they not see and hear me? Are entities communicating volumes of information but something is just standing in our way? Are they frustrated as well? Am I broken? I can go on and on… Any advice? Words of wisdom? I’m down but I haven’t given up!

What Does Sarah Say About This?

Since Sarah Estep was my main inspiration for starting the experiment, today I decided to go back to her book, Voices of Eternity. I’ve reached out to her daily in the sessions. Maybe she can’t hear me. Maybe I can’t hear her. Maybe she’s got bigger things going on. Maybe her soul is currently living another incarnation. Could she be reading this blog now? Am I still talking? :-)
What words of wisdom would she give?

Frequently at the beginning I would go for days without recording a paranormal voice. Then, when I felt most discouraged and wondered if I wanted to keep on taping, someone would speak. Now, twelve years and twenty-four-thousand messages later [this was in 1988], I am convinced that I am in communication with entities from other dimensions. At the same time, I feel I have learned a considerable amount about life in the beyond.

Down the Road…

I have two EVP sessions left for this current experiment, today and tomorrow evening. Please know that if I hear anything impressive you’ll see a post on it. In the next week I think I’ll create a page linked to this blog and list information about the experiment, my findings, my progress, etc. Once this current experiment is over I fully intend on continuing to record on a consistent basis… hopefully 3 or 4 days a week.
Anyway… thanks for reading and following my progress!

From my March 26, 2012 blog post – EVP Update: My Visit from a rapper!

Tonight will be my last recording for this official two-week EVP experiment. I’ll review that session tomorrow evening. Yesterday was day 13 in my EVP experiment. If you’ve been following this blog you’ll know that I had several days in a row of disappointing sessions. Well apparently all it took was a little bit of whining, encouragement from many of you… and some serious begging through a meditation before last night’s experiment. It took me several hours to review the audio and before I knew it I had typed three pages of notes. I may not have any impressive voices… but I definitely had a visitor.
Below are summarized segments from my notes and some audio files. Times are represented in minutes and seconds. For example, one minute and 30 seconds = 1:30.  ”Tap” and “knock” are pretty much used interchangeably as it is hard to decide which is which right on the spot.
(From the Tascam digital recorder)
Thirty seconds into the recording there is a knock (before I even said anything), at 1:24 a tap. I then ask “Is that you making that noise?” No response.
I then ask “Can you make another noise if that was you?” Several seconds later… “Like two taps or two knocks?” A few seconds later after getting no response I asked “Have you been present with me before in one of these sessions?” Two loud and clear taps at 2:02. The first one further away and the second one closer to the recorder.
At 2:35 I ask if they could give me two more knocks just for validation. I gottwo taps at 2:51.
I then decided that 1 knock was going to mean “yes” and two knocks was “no”. I asked “Have you been with me in one of these EVP sessions before in the last couple of weeks?” and 15 seconds later there was a faint unidentified noisein the background followed by a tap.
A few questions with no responses.
At 5:10 I ask “Do I know you?” A very light tap can be heard at 5:20. I mentioned “I THINK that was a tap” and then “Yes? Thank you.” Maybe there was another light tap before I answered but I cannot hear it in the audio.
At 5:50 there is another tap while I’m in the middle of a rather long question. I was asking for them to pass on a message, tell me who they are, etc. After the tap I finished my question and also asked where they were talking to me from… the other side? No response. My question ended at 6:00. At 6:16 there is a tap.
At 6:30 “You seem to be good at the knocking thing. Can you tell me… are you male?” For several seconds there is no response. “Maybe that’s ‘no’.”Immediately there is a tap at 6:47.
At 6:52 I asked “Are you female?” No response.
At 8:17 I’m playing music and ask “How many of you are with me?” At 8:34 you can hear a very loud knock somewhere in the house.
At 9:07 I ask “Can you make anymore noises? I think the noises are just how you want to communicate today.” No responses.
I then started up the pink noise portion of the session got no responses to several more questions.
At 11:42 I ask “Is there something I can help you with?” A few seconds later at 11:46 (pink noise still playing) you can hear what sounds like a very soft and low-pitched “no” (11:42 in PX-820… sounds a bit different but still there). A second later… “Or are you here to help me?” No response.
At 12:32 after pink noise is turned off I ask “Are you still there?” At 12:23 in the PX-820 there is two syllables of something heard very softly… right before “Are you still there?” At 12:41 there is a knock. I say “Okay!”
A few seconds later (12:53) I say “I’ve been asking for the presence of Sarah Estep or Cathy…” Before I could finish the question there was a very loud tap right in the room! I say “Ooh… Sarah, is that you?” No response.  At 13:98… “Sarah Estep?” No response. At 13:15… “Or Cathy? Is that you Cathy?” A few seconds later… “Cathy from The Big Circle?” No response.
At 13:31… “I’m kind of excited! Who is this?” You can hear a few very light pops or taps. At 13:48… “I feel like I can’t go on without knowing who you are.” No response. At 14:04… “Should I continue? Or should I end this session and listen?” No obvious responses. You can hear two very soft taps that are very close to the microphone… but I can’t be sure if it’s something I’m doing or not.
A few more questions with no responses.
At 16:04… “So could this knocking be from Sarah?” No response. At 16:18…“Cathy?” At 16:31 there is some kind of knock in the room.  At 16:40… “Was that a ‘yes’ for Cathy? Did I hear you correctly? Is this Cathy then?” A few seconds later…  “Knock if it’s Cathy”. Other than a dog barking outside, there are no responses.
At 17:05… “Are you someone other than Sarah or Cathy? Or ________? Could you knock if you’re someone else?” At 17:20 there are two faint knocks that I acknowledge hearing in the recording. I’m not sure if this was the answer of “no” or if this was an entity just knocking in response to my question, in general.
At 21:02 I began to do my usual thank you to anyone helping me, but I didn’t get very far. I began “Well I want to thank you for your energy…” and there was a pretty loud knock close by. I excitedly say “Oh!” and you can hear a dog barking loudly outside in the background. A few seconds later… “Thank you, there’s one.”
At 21:16… “I feel like maybe you’re playing games with me. Every time I move on I hear a knock” (more dog barking). A few seconds later… “…but as I was saying, thank you for your presence and your energy… and your assistance.”A few seconds later… “Any last messages… before we end?” No response. A few seconds later… “Thank you.” Then my elbow popped and I laughedand said “Now my bones are popping!”
End of recording.

Just some of the audio…

Beginning… “Is there someone present with me today?”

Let’s have a conversation

Have you been with me before?

How many of you are with me?

Possible voice before “Are you still there?” and knock

“Sarah, is that you?”

“…should I end this session and listen?”

“…thank you for your energy”

“Is there something I can help you with?” (“No”)

My thoughts…

SOOOOOO…. Did the FOX sisters stop by? I’ve asked for their presence before, but not recently. Was it Sarah? Cathy? I got lost in the answers. I was caught off guard by this rapper and wasn’t expecting to translate knocks. I have NEVER heard so many pops and taps in my house. I’ve been sitting here this entire evening and haven’t noticed one creek!
As exciting as this has been, it has been very tiring going through it all and getting it up before bed. Listening to some of these audio clips again, I’m wondering if there aren’t other “voices” I missed the first time around. I’ll keep working on them.
I’m excited to hear what you think!
PEACE!

From my March 29, 2012 blog post

So it has been a really rough and tiring week now that life has moved on after spring break. All of my experimenting really took a lot of my energy and focus. The last few days of experimenting were particularly rough. I have sometimes scoffed at the idea of spirits or entities wearing people down, consuming our energy, or attaching themselves to us. This evening I wondered if there was more truth to this than I ever knew. Is this a side effect of so much daily spirit communication and research? Or… was I just too consumed with it to go to bed at a decent hour? :-)  Some of my readers could speak about this I’m sure.
