“Spiritual” and “Religious”…

Here are a few questions to ponder today.

Are you “religious” or “spiritual”?

Do they have to be different? Are you both? Neither?

Next question.

How did your upbringing or early life experience lead you to where you are now and how you classify yourself?

If you’re wondering what brought this on, bear with me and I’ll attempt to explain. Sometimes I get going on these things and I wonder if I’m even being coherent. In recent weeks I’ve gotten a few comments here, mostly polite,  from people who I would consider “religious”. For the most part, these comments have shared concerns that spirit communication is from the Devil or evil. I apparently need to find God… which is weird, because I feel like I have a pretty close relationship with him, actually. I have no intention of censoring these comments, providing they stay respectful. And just to be clear, I have comments set to be approved mainly due to the fact that I have students out there. They’re free to read, but they don’t need to comment. 🙂

In one of the comments, the reader discussed how she was once into “the occult” (a term that is SO misunderstood and is often confused with “cult”), but now she’s Christian. It was suggested that I repent and “seek God, rather than demonic spirits.”

Well… I realize it is dangerous to go here, but I’m going to. As soon as I read the comment discussed above, I couldn’t help but think about how my path has been the opposite of hers. And, I suppose, we both would see each others paths as backwards. I grew up and spent a LOT of time in a Southern Baptist Church. My sister and I were the third generation of our family to go to this church. By the time I was in high school, I was a staff musician and was getting some great experience. But it was also around this time that I learned some disappointing things that were going on in the congregation. Not only that, but nationally there was a lot of controversy going on with the Southern Baptist Convention spreading and teaching hate. Ellen Degeneres had come out of the closet and so of course they boycotted everything having to do with ABC and Disney (their parent company). Ring a bell? People can be so very hateful in the name of God… and they’ll follow anyone who refers to themselves as a “pastor” or “preacher”. So I think my family determined that there was more love and acceptance at home than in the church. But I decided to stay until I left for college, gritting my teeth the whole time… and I made that decision for one reason only… music.  In college I worked in two or three different churches as a staff musician and for a year was a director of music. I’ve been known to say that the only thing I got out of these church experiences was music, which has ended up being a huge part of my life, but that’s not exactly true. There were many people who helped raise and support me in my hometown church, people who I have lots of love and respect for. There were many nice people who I worked with in college. But… you can lose a lot of yourself in organized religion. And most definitely, not everything shouted from a church pulpit is good… or even true, for that matter.

Around 5 years ago I began what I refer to as my “spiritual shift”. I am so much closer to God now than I ever was before then… and I don’t regret leaving organized religion. I don’t think anyone is ever truly enlightened… and I definitely have my flaws (oh boy, that’s another blog post), but I’ve certainly come a long way since then. It’s like my eyes are opened now. I can’t imagine going back to a time where I knew nothing about a spirit guide… or meditation… or energy, or the fact that we’re all loved, no matter what and no one is judged! And… I can’t believe there was a time when “ghosts” were just people wearing bedsheets on Halloween. Aren’t we doing our children an injustice by teaching them that there is a physical land up in the sky covered with clouds and angel wings where only some of us go? I remember praying a lot growing up… begging to not go to the fiery place where the red guy with horns would torture you. And if we’re teaching kids that to get them to behave (Jesus on the shelf?), then we have serious issues. To me, closing my mind and going back to a world where dogma is kept alive to keep leaders of churches and religious organizations in power would be a giant leap backwards. I know too much now. And spirit communication? I’ve yet to have a negative experience. Why wouldn’t we want to learn more?  (Side note. Check out MOSS’s two investigations [HERE and HERE] of a church that DID want to know more. Cool experience!)

So… I know everyone has their own path. I get that. I know very little about these readers other than their “religious” comments. They very well may be the nicest and sweetest  people one could meet. But… how does one respond? Do you smile and just move on? Do you write up a blog post about it? 😉 Am I even being coherent? Am I going to Hell? Care to start a discussion?

Christians and the Occult (kristinemcguire.com)

Are you sure you want to know?

Are you a serious paranormal investigator or researcher? Maybe you’re an experiential paranormal investigator who is in it for the fun and excitement (and the guided ghost tour that comes with it). Perhaps you are the paranormal’s biggest fan and enjoy following and promoting the latest research and news. Even if you don’t fit into one of these camps, you are most likely at least curious in this moment about the paranormal. After all, you landed on a page named “The Big Séance”.

I think it’s pretty safe to say that most people involved in the paranormal are in it because they want proof… proof of life after death… proof of alien life… proof of Sasquatch… proof of fairies (I just rolled my own eyes). Or maybe they’re just looking for answers. Is my loved one trying to contact me? Was that dream real or just sleep entertainment? Of course then there are the people who either claim they have that proof, or they just know and they don’t need anyone to tell them one way or the other. Thanks to science and hard-core skeptics, the ultimate proof and complete explanation of paranormal experiences and phenomena will probably never happen in my lifetime… or at least it probably won’t be widely accepted.

This week I heard someone propose these questions.

What happens if we find that proof? What happens if suddenly all of our paranormal questions are answered?

What will all the paranerds in the world do then? What would one watch on SyFy or A&E? Suddenly this blog and others like it would be filled with only facts. Facts are kind of boring, wouldn’t you say? There would be no mystery… no curiosity… no excitement of the journey! And gosh, what would I do when October and Halloween comes around again? I’d have to come up with a new past time. People keep talking about this Pinterest stuff. Maybe I could start a stamp collection! (After all, one of these days people won’t know what they are!)

So I got to thinking about this quite a bit in the last few days. I’m all for finding more answers. I think the world needs them now. But I’m not sure I want ultimate proof of everything right now while I’m here on Earth. I don’t want to cross over while uneventfully and absent-mindedly walking past all those beautiful temples while catching up on the messages and status updates that I missed while on Earth on my Afterlife iPhone. (I’d hate to fall in one of those beautiful fountains.) And how insulted would my passed loved ones and pets be if they were there with banners and party hats waiting to greet me and I simply said “Catch ya later. I’m going to go take a nap” while forgetting about my life review appointment? I’m not cool with having all the answers provided to me now. That would be like cheating on the test, right? I want to be a little surprised.

The latest books to land on my doorstep!

I’m excited to share with you the latest books to land on my doorstep. I started Speaking to the Dead with Radios today and am considering being brave and reading both of these at the same time. I don’t do that often. I’ve read several “spiritual” books recently so I feel it’s time to once again dig deep into some “ghostie” books. Sometimes I just feel the need to do some homework.

True Haunting by Edwin F. Becker

This is the story of a true haunting. It was the first ever filmed and televised by NBC in 1971. A young couple purchases a building that was built and occupied by a single family that refused to relinquish their hold, even after death. Investigated and verified by experts, this residence brought chaos to the lives of those who chose to reside there. Unlike a horror novel, this chronicles what a real ghostly experience would resemble. Long before the laws of disclosure, a young couple winds up in the midst of strange occurrences prior to the term ‘paranormal’ becoming a common description. Searching for help at time when supernatural events were a taboo subject and being ignored by the Church, sent them into a desperate search for any assistance. Only a little known organization came to their aid. Author Tom Valentine, brought in a nationally known psychic, Joseph DeLouise, who then asked assistance of an exorcist from England, Reverend William Derl-Davis. Together, they gave their best effort at exorcising the multiple spirits inhabiting the building and disrupting the lives of the living. Events were filmed by NBC, who sent their most prominent Chicago journalist, Carole Simpson, to cover the event. Follow a young couple with a newborn as they attempt to cope with inexplicable events, experience denial, plead for help from their Church, and step into the world of the paranormal. Understand why ghosts cannot be exorcised and a true example of their strong sense of domain, even after death. Learn what experts and gifted people did in a failed attempt to assist this desperate couple. There is no happy ending, as the young couple suffers emotionally, are physically threatened, have their pets terrorized, and eventually suffer financially by actually “giving” their building away. What was intended as a financial answer to their prayers became, instead, a curse to be abolished. Learn many of the various manifestations that can be common in haunting. Ghosts can be seen and heard. They can propel objects and interrupt utilities. They can affect your moods and feed off of your emotions. They can appear as solid as you and me. They can react and become hostile if threatened or violated. Most important, as this young couple learned, they can harm you and cannot be removed. This is a firsthand accounting of what a true haunting is like. There are certain subtle occurrences you may find the most frightening, because you just might relate and recognize them. If so, guess what? You may have a ghost! (Book description from Amazon.com.)

Speaking to the Dead with Radios by Michael Hobert Edwards

Speaking to the Dead with Radios I will tell you is not this just another fish story to reel in readers for momentary mind entertainment. Communicating with the dead using a radio with recorder is achievable and any person can do it. You do not need to be a psychic, a medium or have any paranormal gifts to make contact with the dead using these devices, and that my friend is the luxury of this in that you do not have to pay someone else hundreds or even thousands of dollars to contact your deceased family members or friends as you can do it yourself in the privacy of your own home. (Book description from Amazon.com.)

An Afterlife Visitation…

I am just about finished with Heavenly Hugs: Comfort, Support, and Hope From the Afterlife by Carla Wills-Brandon, PhD. The author mostly discusses and tells stories of Departing Visions, which are often witnessed when a person is close to death (usually within hours). A common example of this would be when the dying person sees a long dead relative and begins speaking to them. Many believe these visitors are there to comfort the dying or even to help them cross over.

But a portion of this book also discusses Afterlife Visitations, and so today I feel inspired to share an experience that my father has talked about many times.

Grandpa Keller holding my dad as a baby.

Grandpa Keller holding my dad as a baby.

When I was very little, my dad used to go to work with my Grandpa Keller for a while, and grandpa would come by our house at around 2:30 or 3 in the morning to pick him up. My dad says that you could always hear his old beat up truck with a loud muffler outside when he arrived. Often when my dad was late or if he slept in, my grandpa would get out of the truck and knock loudly on their bedroom window to get him up and going. Well when I was 3 years old, my Grandpa Keller died. Several weeks or a month after that, my mom and dad were woken up in those same early morning hours one spring or summer night. What woke my dad was what he says sounded like grandpa’s loud truck. All of a sudden there were loud bangs on the bedroom window, followed by the sound of the loud truck taking off down the road. My mom says she definitely remembers hearing the banging on the window and feeling shocked or stunned. Dad threw on some pants and took off out the front door to see who was there. No one was there. And he claims that even though you could still hear the truck taking off down the road, there were no lights and no truck to be seen.

I don’t have many memories from this time, and I definitely don’t remember this event, but I love to hear my dad recalling it.

Bill Maher and Near Death Experiences (Big Séance)

Bill Maher and Near Death Experiences…

In the last couple of weeks my mind has been on the topic of Near Death Experiences (NDEs) and Departing Visions (or Deathbed Visions). A Near Death Experience is where a person has a spectacular (in most cases) and very real, heavenly experience where they leave their body and all of their earthly pain and troubles. They often hover above their physical bodies (many times in a hospital or surgical setting). Most report a bright light or a tunnel of light, sometimes a bridge, and greeting a familiar face or family member on the other side. They’re told it’s not their time yet… and then they’re abruptly pulled back to their physical body, retaining the memory of the whole experience. A Departing Vision is often witnessed when a person is close to death (usually within hours). Perhaps they start speaking to a long dead relative, and perhaps they are annoyed that you can’t see them and don’t acknowledge the visit. Many statements uttered by people experiencing these visions lead witnesses to believe that these unseen visitors are there to comfort the dying or even to help them cross over. Both of these phenomena are often explained away by scientists or skeptics as a kind of hallucination caused by lack of oxygen to the “dying brain”.

I’ve been reading Heavenly Hugs: Comfort, Support, and Hope From the Afterlife by Carla Wills-Brandon, PhD. I have never experienced an NDE or a Departing Vision, but like many people, I’ve heard stories from family members who were present and saw or heard things when they were at the bedside of a dying loved one. I plan on sharing one of those stories soon, perhaps when I finish the book.

But what I wanted to share with you is something I saw just this last weekend. This is a clip from the most recent episode of Real Time with Bill Maher. I can’t pretend or cover up the fact that I’m a proud liberal and LOVE Bill Maher. However, I was disappointed and maybe thrown off a bit by how the topic of NDEs were laughed at and dismissed by most of the panel. Maybe I’m just such a paranerd that I am losing touch with the rest of the world. Is this really how the common person views it? And if so… what must they think of my blog?! 🙂

Human Collective, Gandhi, & Angelic Realm Séance

Below is a guest post by medium, Marilyn Painter, that I am excited to present to you. See my last post for an introduction. Also, I encourage you to check out her Complete Data Comparison Grids linked in the post. Enjoy!

Medium, Marilyn Painter, during our second séance.

Medium, Marilyn Painter, during our second séance.

The primary reason why most conduct a séance is to receive physical concrete evidence that spirit exists, is with us, and can communicate to us. Usually we hope to hear an audible voice, an out of the ordinary knock or sound, see an object move, or an apparition. However, when we have predetermined expectations or limitations on what we would consider evidence, we could miss a profound display of evidence that is grander than any of our conceptions.

On Saturday, September 29, 2012, Patrick Keller, founder of Missouri Spirit Seekers Paranormal Investigators, a male and female sitter, and me conducted a séance at Ahtah Sanctuary Holistic Center. During this séance, one at a time, we called upon the Divine Consciousness of Humanity, divine spirit of Mahatma Gandhi, and finally the Angelic Realm. Our intention was; if it is in divine will, to bring forth, here and now, physical evidence of their existence and any messages they felt beneficial.

As I set to organize my thoughts to write this post, I was guided by spirit to recall the last message received that came from communications in the Angelic Realm at this Séance, “But it kept saying and showing me the eye is very important… “to see through” … I couldn’t get it all. There’s something very strong about the eye and the deep seat of the soul.” At the time of the Séance, I didn’t understand the message “to see through/eye/deep seat of the soul”.  But I get it now!!!   Bypass the physical eye for evidence that spirit exists, is with us, and can communicate with us. Enter into the spiritual eye of the soul. What I know through experience, spirit communicates energetically in frequencies. The spiritual eye of the soul entails clairvoyance, claircognizance, clairaudience, clairsentience etc.

When I do soul readings for people or readings for those who want to hear from a loved one in spirit, most all are hoping there is some information revealed about them or the loved one that they know and I couldn’t know for evidence that spirit is communicating to them through me.  Validation of a reality or experience grows solid when more than one has a similar knowing, reality or experience. Therefore, validation of spirit communication during Séance 2 is stronger if two or more have related experiences during communication efforts. In keeping with the guidance of the Angelic Realm, I bypassed physical evidence and looked into similarities in Spiritual Eye of the Soul experiences.

A video still from our second séance.

A video still from our second séance.

Patrick Keller sent me a transcript of the audio recordings from Séance 2. I compared all of the sitters’ descriptions of their sensory experiences during all three communications of Séance 2. Even though the mediumship skill levels of 3 out of the 4 sitters ranged from none to minimal experience, there was evidence of two or more related experiences during all 3 communication efforts, especially during communications with Mahatma Gandhi.

The following are excerpts from the Séance 2 transcript that demonstrate similar knowing and experiences among the sitters during Séance 2 communication efforts. Click for: Complete Data Comparison Grids

Collective Human Consciousness

Marilyn:  “When the Spirit Box was turned on, Marilyn said she continued to hear it (high pitched frequency) more amplified and it was longer strands, almost like Morse code or a signal.”

*(Note: Marilyn can hear the sounds of energy with her physical hearing mechanisms.)

Sitter 2: “Feeling a surge of energy when the Spirit Box was turned on.”

Mahatma Gandhi

Marilyn: “His energy very, very strong and I see him as a white light. Beautiful, beautiful white light… pure… beautiful.”

“The energy was so big, a bright white light

Patrick: “Mentioned in a vision, he was looking up to see the bright sky while under water.”

Marilyn: “and then it became like a full moon. Then she felt night time.”

Patrick:  “At one point I was seeing faces… fading in from the dark… face after face, seeing all of the features.”

Sitter 1: “Feeling like it got darker or feeling darkness.”

Sitter 2: “Feeling like it got darker or feeling darkness.”

Marilyn: “Gandhi came to her in human form but then switched to a pure energy form.”

Patrick: “At one point I was seeing faces… fading in from the dark… face after face, seeing all of the features.”

Marilyn: “Reported feeling heavier, specifically in the shoulders.”

Patrick: Mentioned getting tingly and itchy around the throat.

*(tingly with itchy is a heavy type of feeling and the throat is on the same plane as shoulders)

Sitter 1: Reported feeling heavier, specifically in the shoulders.

Marilyn: “I saw flooding and the earth around to where it created islands, so to speak, or separation.”

Patrick: “Mentioned having visions of being underwater (like the ocean… deep greenish aqua color) and looking up to see the bright sky while under water. This was right before Marilyn mentioned flooding.”

Angelic Realm

Marilyn: “Marilyn said a lot of what she was feeling was in the head and the crown. It was good… not a heavy energy.

Sitter 1: “Said she just experienced a lighter feeling.”

Marilyn: “I saw that white light, and a little bit of the blue… it was really crystally”

“As I was traveling and flying really quickly toward this bright white light…”

Sitter 1: “Said they were seeing white light come over here and then it seemed like it was kind of illuminating

It illuminated… like it was starting to spread out.”

Sony PX-720 Digital Audio Recorder (placed behind Marilyn’s chair)

Sony PX-820 Digital Audio Recorder (placed on the center table)

From 1:47:55 – 1:48:13 in PX-820, I (Patrick) feel as if I hear several messages requesting us to “leave”, “leave, please”, or “leave us.” “I can possibly hear some “leaves” in the next rotation as well.”

1:48:46 in PX-820, “(Patrick) something interesting that I can’t make out. Almost sounds like “Rachel” to me. (Marilyn, in response to Patrick’s notes in his transcript) Could it be, “Raphael”, as in Arch Angel Raphael, “Patron of Travelers” who helps with inward spiritual journeys, assisting in searches for truth and guidance?)

Marilyn: “It was a long journey, traveling to their place.”

Had to travel quite far to get to them. The other ones; they just kind of came here. So I felt like I traveled to where they were at.”

“Then all of a sudden I saw this white circle… it was like I was flying through the clouds and it was kind of powder blue like I was a bird… like with angel wings. And it (possibly archangel Raphael) was taking me there.”

1:47:55 – 1:48:13 in PX-820, (Patrick) “I could also interpret one of them as a “stay”.”

Patrick: “Said he was not as focused this time around.”

Sitter 2: No input; tired perhaps.

(This may be why spirit communicated “stay”. They were not in the energy to “leave/travel”.)

**The following physical data was obtained and noted in the transcripts by Patrick Keller:

During the Mahatma Gandhi portion of the Séance

56:35 in PX-720, 56:59 in PX-820 – Some kind of bell or chime or clang sound in the background. Much louder in the PX-720.

1:00:47 in PX-720, 1:01:11 in PX-820 – Same bell/chime/clang sound. And again, it was picked up louder in the PX-720.

1:13:38 in PX-720, Sounds like possibly the quick squeal of the **Trifield Meter. Not picked up in the PX-820. (Trifield was right next to the PX-820)

Trifield Meter (left) and Mel Meter (right) with temperature and EMF readings.

Trifield Meter (left) and Mel Meter (right) with temperature and EMF readings.

**Patrick here… since this transcript and analysis of the audio was typed up, I have completed all video analysis. The camcorder focused on the Trifield meter showed that there were never any readings, and the squeal/alarm never sounded. It is unclear what was making this noise.

1:15:15 in PX-720, Another squeal of the Trifield meter? Not picked up in the PX-820. (Trifield was right next to the PX-820)

1:19:00 in PX-720, Another one again? Not picked up in the PX-820. (Trifield was right next to the PX-820)

1:22:12 in PX-720, Another squeal of the Trifield meter? Not picked up in the PX-820. (Trifield was right next to the PX-820)

End of Angelic Realm portion of the Séance

1:52:47 in PX-720, 1:53:11 in PX-820 – More Trifield sounding noise. Could these noises possibly be a squeak of Marilyn’s chair since the recorder is right behind it? I can hear it softly in the distance in the PX-820. But the Trifield was right next to the PX-820 so I know that’s not what it was.

I (Marilyn) don’t believe the quick squeal noise came from my chair. The chair I was in is a wing-back chair of solid wood and very fluffy cushion. I have never heard it squeak. If it was from the squeak of my chair, I then wonder why my chair squeaked every less than 5 minutes only during the Mahatma Gandhi portion of the Séance (except a final squeak right as we concluded the Séance but different in that both PX-720 and PX-820 picked it up)?

When I am in a trance, conducting mediumship, I feel Spirit communication energy/ frequency come through my back at the spine and also the back top of my head like a current. The PX-720 was on a table closely and directly behind my back where this energy comes through. The squeal noise could be the sound of this energy coming through.  When the sound was picked up in both PX-720 and PX-820 at the conclusion of the Angelic Realm communications, the PX-820 could have picked up the sound of this spiritual energy because the communication energy was quite expanded at the time, and not during communications of Angelic Realm because my spirit left the room and traveled there and received communications there.

Overall, I am ecstatic with the results and experience of this Séance. Thank you Patrick Keller and the Missouri Spirit Seekers Paranormal Investigators for this amazing opportunity.

See through the physical eye and experience with the Eye of the Soul.

Update on a Séance…

Medium, Marilyn Painter

Back in September, Marilyn Painter and I put together two séances as experiments. With Marilyn’s guidance as a medium, I took the lead in planning and designing the first séance, and she orchestrated and planned our second. Though both  séances were different, our goal for each of them was to hopefully document and capture physical phenomena.

Analysis of our first séance (often referred to as “Séance #1) is complete, and in October I blogged about that report and included video highlights.

Sometime in the next day or two I’ll be posting a guest blog post by Marilyn. As I have completed analysis of all audio, video, etc. of our second séance, I wanted to give her the opportunity to introduce, discuss, and interpret the results of that evening.

It is a known fact that to have a successful séance you need a great medium… and I can’t wait for you to read her thoughts.

Stay tuned!
