Big Séance 2012 in Review!

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2012 annual report for the Big Séance. I think it is so very cool! It hasn’t been a year yet, though. My first post was on February 5, 2012. I look forward to celebrating that year anniversary in about a month! Thanks so much for reading and for helping to make this blog a very exciting new part of my life! Also, a BIG thanks to Maria, Ash, Brandie, Diane, and Randy! 🙂

Here’s an excerpt:

4,329 films were submitted to the 2012 Cannes Film Festival. This blog had 16,000 views in 2012. If each view were a film, this blog would power 4 Film Festivals

Investigation Report of a Private Residence in St. Peters, Missouri…

This report has been completed for months but I’ve just now gotten to where I could get the online version done. I learned so much from this investigation. This was my first experience investigating with friend and medium Marilyn Painter. In fact, she invited me onto this case. It was definitely an interesting evening. Thanks, Marilyn!

Holiday Spirits…

There’ll be scary ghost stories
And tales of the glories
of Christmases long, long ago.

Ever hear those lyrics to Andy Williams’ It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year and wonder just what those scary ghost stories were all about? Many would probably think this was a tradition more fitting for spooky Halloween festivities. I always assumed it was a long-lost tradition, but after one of my recent reads, I wasn’t surprised when I discovered it dates back to Victorian days. Oh how I would love to jump into a time machine!

Spirit Photographer William H. Mumler supposedly took this famous photograph, purportedly showing Mary Todd Lincoln with the ghost of her husband, Abraham Lincoln. (From Wikipedia)

Well the lyrics to this song got me thinking of something else in the last few days. Even though I’ve always believed we have special spirits with us (spirit guides, guardian angels, etc.) every moment of our lives, I also believe that there may be other important or meaningful times of the year, such as holidays, when our passed loved ones and other spirits come to check in on us. I think the gathering of families, heightened emotions, reliving past memories, and telling stories of loved ones play a big role in this.

If you’re a regular reader here, you know that I’ve recently begun doing some experimenting with the Ouija board. Not at parties, not for silliness, no alcohol involved, just research. A few weeks ago, a few members of my family (who are also members of my paranormal investigation team) and I had a quiet Ouija session late  on Thanksgiving night. Nothing much to report, but I hoped that a holiday would be a good time to achieve some good spirit communication. I’d planned on trying it again over Christmas, but the timing and atmosphere just didn’t seem right. I plan on having a few sessions here at home this week as I’m still on my holiday break. I’ll keep everyone posted.

Does anyone have a story you’re willing to share relating to this topic?

Carthage Opera House Investigation Report & Evidence…

The 8/4/12 Carthage Opera House investigation was my second joint investigation with the Joplin Paranormal Research Society (JPRS) and J H Paranormal Seekers (JHPS). Like the Fort Chaffee Prison investigation before it, analysis and review of this investigation has been a big undertaking. It is still somewhat a work in progress, however, I’m excited to finally share my report and most of my evidence with you.

Who Cares: Some Possible EVP Artifacts, Just For Fun…

So I’ve been kicked really hard in recent days with this sickness that has been going around. I haven’t had the energy to do much of anything, including sitting at the computer. And recently I haven’t blogged as often as usual. So…. let me make it up to you with a few audio artifacts from two different investigations where the review is somewhat ongoing.

For those who may not be familiar with my EVP… I prefer to categorize many of them as simply “Artifacts” or “Possible EVP”, because most of the time I simply cannot be 100% sure that what I’m hearing is paranormal.

The unenhanced audio artifact below was captured at Fort Chaffee Prison during a joint investigation. At the time this was captured (12:15am), we were packing up from our session in the max security building in the cell where an infamous inmate hanged himself. I asked Dar (JPRS founder) what a particular object in the room was and she said she had no idea. It was already in the cell. As soon as she says “I ain’t touchin’ it” you hear what sounds like a strange voice saying “who cares”.

“who cares”

This next unenhanced audio artifact is from another joint investigation, this time at the Carthage Opera House. This one still boggles me. I can’t decide what I’m hearing. A smaller group of us were investigating what would have been the backstage area of the opera house. At 11:10pm I was preparing to play some trigger music from the time period the opera house built and in business. You will hear two possible EVP behind our voices while setting up to play the music. The first possibly says “sorry”. Could this be the voice of one of us investigators? Doesn’t at all have the sound quality of any of our voices, but it’s just not something that I can say for sure. The second possible EVP is perhaps a child’s voice. This is important because there have been previous reports of people hearing a child’s voice in this building. I believe we have evidence of this voice in other artifacts from the same investigation as well.

“sorry”/Child’s Voice

Yesterday’s Moment…

Yesterday was an unusual day for me. I was not feeling well, having come down with what everyone else has gotten at some point recently at our school. Because of there being a shortage of substitute teachers, I was forced to fight my way through the day at school. I was a bit of a whiner, making sure to warn the kids so they knew to be on their best behavior, and to let them know not to get too close to me.

In one of those stressful passing period moments that are all too common in my job, a student shared that they needed to talk to me in private. They shared with me something so brave and honest that I nearly cried right there. In the back of my mind I knew that this was one of those “moments”. One of those moments where you only have one chance to have the right response and really be there and present for the kid. I did my best. And when the discussion was over I suddenly didn’t have much to complain about.

I began my next class with probably more of a smile, reminding myself that you truly never know what’s going on with your students, especially in middle school, and especially when you see so many of them in your day. Moments like these, I reminded myself, are why I do what I do. It’s not the curriculum, not the testing, not the very short summers. I’m there for the kids.

I began wondering if my “moment” of the day had been arranged in some master plan. Was I supposed to be there? What if I would have stayed home? Did i really help?

Then it was time for lunch. I joined a group of teachers that I don’t usually eat with. Someone walked in and broke the news about the horrific shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.

Just about everyone has had their emotional Facebook or Twitter statement regarding yesterday’s events. Many of them asked the question “why?”, and some even questioned their faith. Many statements gave credit to evil or the Devil himself. As someone who has been very honest and open about the fact that I don’t believe there is a “Devil”, I couldn’t stop wondering why something like this would happen. Are disgusting, heart wrenching events like this truly in some master plan? Or is it just flawed humans bouncing around on the planet with free will?

I can’t even begin to understand what is going on inside the hearts and minds of those Connecticut children and families involved in yesterday’s tragedy. And people are mourning all over the world, really. Talk about a “moment”.

One thing is for sure. When someone asks me where I was when I found out about the events at Sandy Hook Elementary (and it’s already happened once), I’ll be able to tell them that I was at school, not feeling well, but yet learning a big lesson about empathy and compassion.

So a number of blogs I follow have been doing a “photo of the week” type of thing. I don’t know if I’ll start a weekly tradition, but for now it seemed like something interesting to try.

The information below is directly from the report from MOSS’s investigation of Friedens United Church of Christ in St. Peters, Missouri on September 18, 2010.

Outside the Sanctuary – 1st Visit (Patrick & Norman)

1:02am

Interesting readings taken around Wooden Podium outside sanctuary

Pre-Investigation we were getting high EMF readings (as high as 1.9mG) that seemed to come directly from the podium sitting in the corner of the room sitting in front of a closet with some equipment in it. The readings did not seem to come from the wall or any objects around the podium… just the podium. It was if you could trace the outline of the podium and get readings and then as you move away the readings faded. We did not move the podium at that time but only noted the high readings to come back to it later. Our pre-investigation base EMF reading for the room outside the sanctuary in general was between 0 and .1mG.

Later on (approx. 1:05AM) during the investigation we moved the podium and did a sweep in the same location of where the podium was. The highest reading was approximately a .2 to a .6mG
except for a spot around the bottom of the cabinet in the corner which gave off a 1.2mG. Wires running underneath the floor?

Wires behind wall in closet gave off .3 and .6mG which is lower than what the podium area was giving off before the investigation started.

Podium after moving it to the middle of the floor was at the highest a .3mG, still higher than the base reading of the room.

Bottom line is, none of our readings were as high as what they were when we took our pre-investigation base readings. And, the podium does give off some EMF itself, even when moved. There are too many variables in this area (wires in closet, possibly something running under the floor) to call it paranormal, but definitely something interesting to point out. I’d love to know its history or if there is anythingsignificant about this podium.

Podium possibly made out of oak on top and birch or pine on the bottom. (Norman is a

One-Syllable EVP: Memo to Paranormal Investigators Everywhere…

MEMO

To: Paranormal Investigators Everywhere

Re: One-Syllable EVP

___________________________________________

I move that we, as paranormal investigators and researchers, stop placing so much importance and confidence on one-syllable “responses” when recording for EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomena). Whether you’re capturing your EVP through traditional recording methods or through opportunistic methods like white noise generators, radio sweep/spirit box, etc, one-syllable sounds or “responses” are commonly captured. These sounds can certainly satisfy an EVP craving, especially when they happen after we ask those oh so challenging questions requiring a “yes” or “no” answer. After all, you’re eagerly awaiting a wise response. They really can be paranormal (and some of them clearly are), but compared to longer phrases or patterns with more than a single syllable, I feel they’re way more likely to be either imagined or simply one-syllable sounds (either created by investigators, the clipped voice of a DJ from a random radio station, or sounds found in the natural environment) confused for common responses like “yes”, “no”, “hey”, “stop”, “leave”, or any of the single-digit numbers that we always seem to hear. This is often referred to as “pareidolia” or audio “matrixing”.

A creak in the house, a car door shutting from nearby, a bark from the neighbor’s dog, or any slight movement you make while recording can be the cause of these sounds. I think sometimes we’re listening for and hoping to hear things that are paranormal, therefore that quick scratch of your arm through your shirt ended up being a response of “yeah.” I think I annoy fellow investigators a lot because I tend to be more conservative (the word “conservative” is ugly, but so is that annoying phrase “openly skeptical”) in my listening and determining what I’m hearing in recordings. Most of the time I probably end up going with my first instincts. If from the beginning it sounded like a scratch, or the shuffling of a piece of paper, or a footstep on a dusty floor, then in my opinion any words or “responses” that you can force yourself to hear from that noise are accidental. Of course then there’s the opinion and theory that spirits may just take advantage of those natural environment sounds or our own movements to create their communication. It’s possible. In most of these cases I think they’re important to note or document. But to classify some of these as “paranormal” or “EVP” is a bit reckless, in my opinion. This is why I have tons of files saved as “possible EVP” or just simply “artifacts”. They don’t impress people as much, but until I can prove otherwise, that’s what they are to me.

I’ve been tempted more and more recently to not only use two audio recorders (the normal routine for me) in experimental sessions here at home, but to also use a video camera. Your brain can’t log (and recall later) every slight move you make in a recording session. You thought you were sitting silently, but did you scratch your nose? Did your stomach make a quick noise? And in my case (embarrassingly), occasionally my breathing will have a slight wheeze to it… or a tiny squeak. And many times a good audio recorder will pick up a noise that you weren’t even aware was happening. Just like in a more typical paranormal investigation, a video might help you more confidently determine if what you are hearing can be ruled out.

When it comes to radio sweep/spirit box sessions, I still very  much consider myself a newbie. But I keep an open mind. And sure, I’ve heard my name a few times in investigations. I’ve even heard spirits read words presented on objects in the room. Those are notable experiences and responses that are probably worth carefully classifying as “EVP”. But if you have a white noise generator or a spirit box of some kind, do me a favor by doing this little experiment for me. Find a friend or two and challenge them to think of a common one-syllable response without revealing it to anyone. If you listen for at least a minute I almost guarantee that each person (if they’re honest) will report hearing their response. Now challenge them to all listen for the phrase “My name is Sylvia and I like pork chops”. Please contact me directly if you heard this one.

So basically, I feel we just need to be more careful about what we’re so quickly and easily classifying as “EVP” or “paranormal”.

But maybe I’m wrong. Maybe a spirit named “Joe”, who claims there are “five” spirits present, simply saw your Little Debbie next to the recorder and said “yum”.

Fort Chaffee Prison Investigation Report & Evidence…

You probably remember me blogging about some of the great experiences I’ve had while investigating with my friends from JHPS and Joplin Paranormal Research Society (JPRS). Dar with JPRS has been nice enough to invite me (representing Missouri Spirit Seekers) along to some cool places. The 5/12/12 Fort Chaffee Prison investigation was my first joint investigation. Analysis and review of this investigation has been a big undertaking. It is still somewhat a work in progress as JPRS is still completing their review. However, I’m excited to finally share my report and most of my evidence with you.
