Can you help me? No one will listen.
Can you help me? I can’t change the channel on my TV.
Can you help me? I can’t pick up my coffee cup.
Can you help me? I’m not sure where I am.
Can you help me? I’m not sure where I’m supposed to be.
Can you help me? I need to find my way back.
Can you help me? I can’t find my loved one.
Can you help me? I’m lonely.
Can you help me? I’m trapped.
Can you help me? No one seems to see me.
Can you help me? I’m hurting.
Your mind won’t stop wondering. You’ll never forget the feeling. You never forget the chill that crawls up your spine or the strange mix of excitement and deep sadness that sweeps over you when you hear it. It is weeks later. You’re long gone, but now deep in analysis. You replay it over and over. Maybe you step away from your work for just a bit… to process what you just heard. Will you stay up all night wondering what they needed? Are they waiting for you to come back? Are you able to do anything about it? And… will it change your attitude for the next investigation?
One never forgets the first time they hear a spirit ask…
“Can you help me?”
I know I won’t.

Amen and amen again. I totally got it after the second question. My mind went there right away, and I knew where the rest of your words were gonna go. And you put it perfectly. We all have opinions, and yet, it haunts you anyway. Whether we are able to help or not, it grabs your soul and never lets go. It’s a consequence of the work. It’s the hardest part of the work. And yes – definitely yes, they are waiting for you to come back, and that just may be the only help you can give. Just to care enough to come back. Not a long post, but it touched me where I live. Peace.

Thank you, Randy! It was my first and probably last poetry-like writing… Can you tell I was trying to channel our friend Diane? 🙂 Tonight was a neat but emotional experience.

Awesome Patrick! I am touched deeply by this post…I have lost much sleep over the sad words we hear from these spirits. A helpless feeling it is not to be able to help other than to simply listen. By the way, I like your inner poet, you ought to try it more often 🙂 These words haunt and will stick with me for a while.
